we almost won a losing battle

Following the statement issued by UEFA that they only wanted 4 English teams in the third round qualifying draw we always knew that we would not only be competing against the 11 players on the opposition but also UEFA itself.

This in mind, before the draw is made, were thinking if we don't meet Liverpool, we're betting on ourselves being drawn against Inter. We weren't far wrong. Not to rouse suspicion however, UEFA expertly decide give us the SECOND best team in the draw instead........and Liverpool??? .........CSKA Sofia.......just the luck of the draw hey???

By this point we have already lost a large pot of our prize money to the Liverpool (which is probably paying sissokos wages as we speak) & look to have been given a raw deal in the draw, yet still you didn't find too many evertonians complaining.....after all we were still in the draw for the first time in 20 years & had a decent chance of qualifying if we performed......or so we thought.

So, with the first leg at Goodison over, the people at UEFA must have been very proud of what they have achieved so far, as it seems very unlikely that we are going to do what Barca & Real couldn't do last season and beat the spaniards on their home turf. However, nothing could be left to chance when Everton made the trip to Villareal.

Enter Pierluigi Colina.

Now, after watching last nights match, we must firstly presume the hot topic of UEFA/Colina dealings must have been how to nullify the threat of Duncan Ferguson, as from the first minute he was penialised not only for jumping with his arms up(???!) but also seemingly for goin anywhere in the vicinity of a yellow shirt. So 3-1 on aggregate at half-time and everythings goin to plan for UEFA. With ferguson's aerial threat gone, the second half was merely a formality......or so they thought. Those genius's at UEFA must have suddenly started feeling very uncomfotable in their new Villareal shirts, 'COLINA 1' emblazoned on the back.

Following a great free kick from Arteta, it's 3-2 on aggregate & the composed & technically superb spaniards we witnessed at Goodison we're now nowhere to be seen & it was only a matter of time before we equalised.....and this we did. On 80 minutes ferguson headed passed barbosa with as clean a connection your likely to see and suddenly we we're right back in it. However, the realisation of how far Uefa had really gone to make sure Everton would not make the group stages suddenly dawned, as Colina pointed to the first man he saw in a blue shirt & disallowed the goal. What for??? We'll never know, as the player in question he pointed to was Marcus Bent, as the replays show was, if anything, being fouled himself. So, the goal was dissalowed and our chances of progressing to the group stages were now dead............not they were ever really alive in the first place.

Still, well done blue boys for almost winning a losing battle.

Have to agree on the stuff with the game, I think something dodgy went on there, there was NOTHING wrong with the goal.

Unlucky, no how you feel, we lost to Partizan in the same round, after our first season in the CL prior.

Im sat here playing the worlds smallest violin, I really am. At least Liverpool cant get blaimed for this one although i can see this conspiracy being banded around for at least another 20 years, looking forwards to that.

Everton got outclassed and outplayed at Goodison in the first leg and resorted to long ball after long ball. Maybe Evertonians should look at the performance in the first leg and aim some of the blaim towards there own manager for his tactics, or simply accept the fact they were beaten by the better team.

It did look a perfectly good goal in exactly the same way that the one Bolton scored past Everton a few years ago that was dissallowed was that lead to Everton staying up instead of Bolton. Its football, sometimes its goes for you, sometimes against.

did we really get outclassed, really? we learnt the lesson in taking ur chances at home fair enough, but we held our own easy, and it only took moyesey 1 half to figure over there, we got ****ed all game by collina, but thats football, no way were we outclassed, game was ours for the taking after 170 mins, how could we be, fickle kunt

Whats 170 minutes got to do with anything? I said the first leg, the first 90 minutes and in my opinion , and a lot of my evertonian friends as well, everton got largly outclassed in the first leg by the Spaniards ability to pass and move and simply retain the ball.
