Baggies move for Shola set to be rejected.

Baggies move for Shola set to be rejected Jun 8 2005

By Alan Oliver, The Evening Chronicle

West Brom have had a £4.5m bid turned down by Spurs for striker Freddy Kanoute and will now ask Newcastle United about Shola Ameobi.

But West Brom's Geordie boss Bryan Robson can expect no joy from Graeme Souness, his opposite number at St James' Park.

Ameobi did not have the best of times last season, but with Craig Bellamy and Patrick Kluivert gone and young Michael Chopra yet to prove himself in the Premiership, United are lacking in numbers as far as strikers are concerned.

As it happens, Ameobi (pictured) does not expect to be fit for the Intertoto Cup after his hip operation and he is suspended for the first two domestic games of the season after his red card in the game at Everton.

As a result, at this moment Souness only has his skipper Alan Shearer as an out-and- out striker to choose from once the Premiership gets under way on August 13.

As well as West Brom, Spurs have had a long-standing interest in the 23-year-old Ameobi but the striker insists he wants to stay at St James' Park.

He says: "There is always talk at the start of a new season but my heart is in Newcastle and I want to help United win a trophy."

Meanwhile, United have been praised for the way they recognised Chelsea in the final game of the season at St James' Park.

Dave Spicer from Bristol wrote to St James' Park saying: "As a Chelsea fan and season ticket holder I would like to congratulate the Newcastle United players and crowd for the respect and great ovation they gave to the Chelsea team and it was great to be there to witness it.

"It was the complete opposite of the way Chelsea were received by Manchester United fans a few days before."

didn't realise you newcastle fans hated ameobi. To me he looks like a good prospect that just needs to learn how to be consistent.

To be fair, the only reason I'd want him to stay if I was a toon fan would be for the song they sing for him!

hes ****e. You try and tell me you would rather play Ameobi over Kluivert!

He is ****, hes not worth £4.5m why we rejected an offer like that i dont know, the only reason i can think of is that, without Folowasha, we would only have Shearer and Chopra as senior strikers at the club.

Given Shearer is off in 12 months and you haven't signed any new strikers i'd say the Baggies have more chance of signing Ronaldhino.

yep dave, that is the only reason we havent sold Ameobi, we simply cannot. The runours are that we might be signing Benni with a swap deal for Hugo viana's number, 45 (to the tune of brimful of asha) - LOL. but to be honest we need some wuality forwards, an injury upfront and were in crisis.

mind u, whacking Dyer up front is good practice

I don't want Ameobi to leave, he is underated, the only problem he has is not scoring enough.

He has shown some of his ability but it is frustrating when he misses so many easy chances, the only thing I can remember him doing last season was scoring past Man Utd in FA Cup which didn't exactly turn out as hoped.
