Figo

Luis Figo is on the verge of joining Liverpool as talks between the player and club have reached an advanced stage.

The Portuguese international could become the second Real Madrid player to leave Spain for Anfield this year after Fernando Morientes made the move in January.

Figo was the leader of Portugal’s ‘Golden Generation’ and won a FIFA World Youth Championship medal in 1991. He also made his full debut that year against Luxembourg.

He retired from international football after Portugal were defeated by Greece in the EURO2004 final. He had won 110 caps and scored 31 goals during his international career.

Figo left his native Portugal in 1995 and moved to Barcelona for a reported fee of just over £4m. He spent five wonderful years at the Camp Nou winning two Primera Liga titles and the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

In an extremely controversial move in 2000, Figo joined arch rivals Real Madrid for a then world record fee of £37m. The massive fee appeared justified as Madrid and Figo went on to win another two league titles and the Champions League. Figo himself also won the FIFA World Footballer of the Year in 2001.

He has an impressive list of honours to his name:

4 La Primera titles, Champions League, Intercontinental Cup, 2 Spanish Cups, 3 Spanish Super Cups, European Cup Winners’ Cup and 2 European Super Cup winners medals. As well as his FIFA World Footballer of the Year title in 2001 he had been named European Footballer of the Year the year before.

He can speak four languages including English and is married with one daughter. A move to Merseyside would raise a few eyebrows in the Premiership and would certainly cause a buzz of excitement amongst the Anfield faithful.

Yeah, I am a bit sceptical, well, I was at first, but I think on a free, he may be able to give us a couple of good years, and he's a good old fashioned type winger, like's to beat a man and gets balls into the box, so why not.

hmm.. source?

players from real madrid who are on the fringes who id take are owen and solari. though i think, according to his form of late, beckham would be a useful acquisition if it were on a free

I'd take him, it couldn't hurt, and we could fix the right wing problem for a year or two so then we can take care of other positions.

I think Figo will be a good signing... we need somone again who has experiance in the game.. someone like Mcallister... when we had Mcallister we won a cup treble... We have for a while been known as a young team and have been a young team. i think we miss experiance like Mcallister... i think Figo can be a key signing he has the experiance to take the midfield on...
In my opion he can make an inpact... i'm all for the signing of figo

I told you lot about this two weeks ago in another thread!

I'd love him here. I think he'll bring some much needed CLASS and is a big name albeit on the way down maybe towards retirement but still class.

people who say no seem to be forgetting who we are talking about!!! when he plays these days he still had loads of class. his balance and ability to beat a man are top draw. plus, he takes a wicked penalty

oh wow chelsea buy another midfielder. why dont you use the others on the bench like smertin or parker or even jarosik but no just buy a new guy to take the place of another player you dont need. lampard, duff, robben and joe cole are fine jeez sit back and let them play instead of buying another useless buy

well according to what his old man has been saying its either us or Real. (He was going to leave Betis for us last season, but the transfer didnt happen cos of the Ranieri/Mourinho thing).

from the sounds of it, I think it will be down to personal terms (think the old man is out for as much wages as possible for his son)
