Pompey plump for Perrin

Alain Perrin is set to become Portsmouth's new manager on Thursday, with Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric admitting the Frenchman is his "number one candidate".

The 48-year-old former Marseille boss could be assisted by former Tottenham manager and director of football David Pleat on a short-term basis.

Mandaric said: "We have our number one candidate and that is Alain Perrin from France. Also David Pleat would come for seven games to help him out on all the issues of English football."

Mandaric is hoping to secure Perrin's services on a two-year contract in addition to the run-in of the current season.

"Alain is not coming just for seven games, he's coming to sign a contract as a manager for seven games plus two years," the Pompey chairman added.

"Unfortunately it is not done, it is not sealed and delivered. We still have a dialogue to carry on, we have a board meeting at 4:30pm then on Thursday we have a meeting with David and Alain to iron out some details.

"We can't confirm today that it will be done but there is a strong possibility that it will be done."

Mandaric added: "Alain is a very good quality coach who took a very small club at Troyes from nowhere into Europe and earned the chance to be at Marseilles where he stayed for two years.

"I think he will fit in with Portsmouth if we bring him here. If we are relegated life goes on. We will just have to pick up and get back into the Premier League. Alain will have full responsibility and full power to pick the team.

"Velimir Zajec is still learning about English football. It is the strongest league in the world and I just don't want to take any more chances. These last seven games are crucial and you have got to move things. If things don't work you have to correct them. I am not going to hesitate to make decisions."

So this is the "British manager with premiership expirience" is it ?

Has all the makings of a Santini style screw up if you ask me.

SSN say he was sacked from a middle east club (?) after 3 months because of poor results, that was his last job.

Santini had a good track record before he went to Spurs, Wenger apart how many Frenchman have been a success in the premiership ?.

How many Russians have been a success in the Prem? God, there hasn't exactly been tons of French managers in the Prem (naturally....). Besides Santini made exellent buys, what do you exactly expect from a manager from another country new to the league? And why not include Wenger? One of the best managers to be in the Premeriship...
