Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits he is looking to sign a new centre-back this summer, and has "plenty of names" on his radar.
Sol Campbell, William Gallas and Mikael Silvestre have all left the club since May, while Laurent Koscielny from Lorient is Wenger's only addition to his central defence.
Johan Djourou has made his comeback after being sidelined for almost all of last season with injury, but with Thomas Vermaelen that leaves Wenger just three established centre-backs to choose from.
The Gunners boss admits he required five central defenders last season, and is looking to bring at least one more to the Emirates Stadium this summer.
But, for the time being, the Frenchman is keeping quiet on which players he has his eye on.
"I wouldn't like to give you any names," Wenger told Arsenal's official website.
"There are plenty of names that we consider and we analyse. We look at the financial possibilities and the technical potential. But it is impossible for me to come out with a name.
"We are still on the search because at the moment we only have three centre-backs and we have seen last season you needed five.
"I believe we need at least four because we have some other players who can fill in this position but overall we are still on the search."

I would have thought it would only be backup though. The fact that Wenger was willing to bow to the demands for Koscielny makes me think he wanted the first team sorted before pre-season. The mention of technical potential doesn't suggest another Campbell/Silvestre style 30+ signing though

Could be a younger CB along the lines of Zapata or someone who's like 22-25 y/o. All I know is that we should be going for a bit more height at the back.

Song can play CB can't he?
Obviously his qualities are better in midfield but if it came down to it, he can slot in there.

Yeah, Song is always an option back there. However, when Song plays back there, we're quite exposed in the middle because of our lack of height and inability to cover the back four. Denilson and Diaby can't do the job sufficiently.
I think our #5 CB would be Nordveit. Or another option could be moving Sagna into the middle and having Eboue at RB...

I think Nordveit will be our general utility player. He seems to be 5th choice centreback, 3rd choice right back and 2nd/3rd choice defensive midfielder from the way Arsene is talking.

Just read this on BBC's gossip page....
Quote:
1229 BST: Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is preparing a bid for Stuttgart centre-back Serdar Tasci and Bayer Leverkusen goakeeper Rene Adler, 25, and hopes that an outlay of £22m will seal deals for the German duo.

Caught offside is bollocks, but I'd love that to be true. Stuttgart aren't likely to let another two of their best players go when they've sold Kheidera (sp?) to Real Cvnts (sp?)

Inler mentioned there... a more defensive minded midfielder could be a wise option given our defensive issues. Song isn't mobile enough to cover the midfield on his own and I wouldn't feel confident with any of our other midfield options providing the tenacity we need back there. Frimpong has looked decent but is limited going forward so we'd be looking at Song coming forward a bit more to stop us being dependant on Cesc through the middle.
I don't think we'll get anyone in bar a CB now but I'm a bit nervous about the composition of the midfield 3 at the moment

Ghana star Kwado Asamoah has been told not to give up on a dream move to Arsenal.
The 21-year-old has all but conceded that he will be staying at Udinese despite being linked to a number of clubs - but his agent insists that the Gunners are interested.
Asamoah impressed during the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year but struggled to repeat his form at the World Cup in South Africa.
Interest appeared to cool, but agent Claudio Vagheggi said: 'There are several interested teams, in England there is Arsenal. In Italy, Fiorentina like him and there is also a big Serie A club who is interested in Kwadwo.
Kwado Asamoah tries to dodge the challenge of Uruguay's Diego Perez
On the ball: Asamoah tries to dodge the challenge of Uruguay's Diego Perez
'Although for the moment there is nothing concrete, we must wait and the next few days will be decisive. Asamoah is happy but if the right offer comes in he will consider it.'
However, the midfielder is resigned to staying at struggling Udinese, who finished 15th in Serie A and have lost some of their best players.
'I was expecting some news on my return from the World Cup,' said Asamoah, 'but I’m still here. I will still be there for one season at least. I am happy here. I can still get better.'

Arsenal are reportedly on the verge of signing Italian international Riccardo Montolivo.
The 25-year-old midfielder was heavily linked with a move to the Emirates as recently as June, with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger reportedly keen to sign the player as a potential replacement for Cesc Fabregas.
With the Gunners' Spanish skipper deciding to stay in north London, a potential move appeared to be on hold. However, the Fiorentina midfielder could yet be on his way to the Premier League.
Italian media sources claim that Arsenal have made contact with the Serie 'A' side, while Viola News goes on to suggest that the Gunners have made a bid for the player already. First Post have since suggested that the Emirates club are 'on the brink' of signing the player
Fiorentina Sporting Director Pantaleo Corvino confirmed that an offer had been made for the player, but declined to reveal the team involved. The Fiorentina-based website have named Wenger's side as the party involved.
Montolivo joined the Florence based club in 2005 after two seasons with Atlanta, and has gone on to become a mainstay for the Serie 'A' side. An international with 17 caps to his name, the player was part of Italy's unsuccessful squad at the recent World Cup in South Africa.
The player's agent was forced to deny that a deal was close in July, but now the Gunners are thought to be close to a deal in the region of £18 million.

£18 million, lol.
If we're gonna do business with Fiorentina, it should be us buying Frey.
God, we're less than two weeks away from the end of the transfer window, and we still don't have a 4th CB. This is getting really, really scary. If Wenger doesn't buy one, we're in deep trouble.

Sources in France reporting the deal is imminent.
Very good signing personally, (almost) exactly what we need.
Add in Schwarzer or Given and its a decent off-season personally.

I think he's off on loan to Italy. Wouldn't want him. Too many injury problems as it is, and it still seems like he needs time to adapt.
