Souness has more pain in ButtNewcastle boss Graeme Souness is anxiously awaiting news on Nicky Butt after the midfielder broke down in training. The England international, who celebrates his 30th birthday on Friday, could be sidelined for months if the troublesome hamstring problem which has kept him out of the last 11 games requires surgery.

Butt's setback comes as a major blow as he was close to a return to action for Sunday's Barclays Premiership trip to Arsenal.

Souness is keeping his fingers crossed that an operation will not be necessary, but the niggling injury has hampered the former Manchester United player ever since his £2.5million switch to St James' Park during the summer and the omens are not good.

'Nicky has suffered a setback and he is highly unlikely to feature at the weekend,' said Souness.

'It is a massive blow to us and him and he is naturally very disappointed to have been hit with the same problem against just as he was on the verge of returning to the side.'

Butt will see a specialist next week when the extent of the damage may become a little clearer, but Souness may well now look for cover during the remaining days of the transfer window with Portsmouth's Amdy Faye having now been linked.

Butt has started only 14 games for Newcastle since his move from Old Trafford.
