Toon linked with Faye.
From Football 365.com:
Portsmouth midfielder Amdy Faye is undergoing a medical at Newcastle United with a view to a shock £2.2m move.
The Senegalese midfielder has pledged his future to the south-coast club but late on Tuesday night a deal was brokered between Toon chairman Freddie Shepherd and Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie.
It was thought that the pair were discussing a move for striker Yakubu Ayegbeni but no official bid has been made for the Nigerian.
Faye was the subject of a £1.5m bid from Birmingham earlier this week and has also been close to a deal to join Aston Villa this season.
Faye told the Portsmouth Evening News on Tuesday: "Every week there's a new club I'm linked with - but I'm staying here.
"I'm getting tired of hearing all this talk and I'm clear in my mind now that I'm staying at Portsmouth."
But it seems that Portsmouth had other ideas and decided to cash in on the midfielder.

I don't know wheter he is an attacking or defensive midfield but i don't like it.
Don't mean to be racism but i cannot see why sounness doesn't seems like to have england player, with the arrival of Faye then Bowyer or Dyer will be departed....
I think Bowyer and Jenas have form a good partnership.

Faye moves to Magpies
by Mark Buckingham - created on 25 Jan 2005
Newcastle United have wrapped up the capture of midfielder Amdy Faye from Portsmouth.
Faye successfully underwent a medical on Tyneside before putting pen-to-paper on a contract with The Magpies.
The Senegal international is joining Newcastle for a fee in the region of £2 million and Magpies boss Graeme Souness is delighted with his new acquisition.
"We are delighted to have him on board and he will be a really valuable addition to our squad," Souness told the club's official website.
"Amdy is a defensive midfield player which is an area we have been looking to strengthen."
With Nicky Butt plagued by a nagging injury, Faye has signed at the right time for Newcastle, who have endured a fitful season in The Premiership.
The 27-year-old is believed to have inked a three-and-a-half year contract at St James' Park and is eligible to make his debut in this weekend's FA Cup fourth round tie against Coventry City.
In moving to the North East, Faye links up with former Auxerre team-mate, and fellow new recruit, Jean-Alain Boumsong.
The duo played together at Auxerre before Faye signed for Portsmouth in a £1.5 million deal in the summer of 2003.
He made 52 appearances for Pompey but bid farewell to his time at Fratton Park by being sent off against Blackburn Rovers on his last outing for the club.
His departure from the South Coast club further depletes Velimir Zajec's midfield options with Nigel Quashie having recently moved along the shore to arch-rivals Southampton.
Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric has lined up three new arrivals at the club for this week and it is likely one of the fresh faces will prove to be a midfielder.
Mandaric's Newcastle counterpart Freddy Shepherd will be hoping the swoop for Faye will deflect some of the attention away from the controversy surrounding Craig Bellamy at present.
Meanwhile, Pompey striker Tresor Lomana Lua Lua has been fined £5,000, and handed an extra one-game ban, by The Football Association.
Lua Lua has been punished due to his failure to leave the pitch following his recent sending off against Blackburn which had earned the forward a three-game suspension.

Boum: Faye deal so Amdy!
JEAN Alain Boumsong says he's "delighted" to be linking up again with Amdy Faye at Newcastle United.
The Senegalese midfielder completed his £2m switch from Portsmouth last night, signing a four-year contract at St James's Park.
Faye and Boumsong played together for three years at French club Auxerre before crossing the Channel to try their luck in Britain with Portsmouth and Glasgow Rangers respectively.
But now their paths have crossed again at Gallowgate, and Boumsong declared: "Amdy is a very good defensive midfielder and he will bring something we need to the club.
"I know him very well and I am delighted that he is here with me now at Newcastle."
Faye, who will wear the number 15 shirt, is Graeme Souness' third signing of the January transfer window, following the arrivals of Boumsong and Celestine Babayaro.
And the Magpies boss is happy with his accquisition, saying: "He is not a spectacular player, but he is one who I believe will do a really good job for us.
"We are trying to become a team that is harder to play against and I'm sure Amdy will be a big help towards achieving this."
Faye's switch from Fratton Park was held up for 24 hours after a delay in the Magpies receiving his medical records, but the 27-year-old is now in line to make his debut in Saturday's FA Cup Fourth Round visit of Coventry City.
Boumsong, however, is a definite non-starter against the Sky Blues after damaging a hamstring during Sunday's 1-0 loss at Arsenal, only his third appearance since an £8m switch from Rangers.
After limping off at Highbury, the French international was sent for a scan on the injury on an injury which could keep him out for at least a month.
He groaned: "I haven't had a hamstring injury like this for a few years now, so to get one so soon after joining a new club makes it doubly disappointing.
"It all happened out of the blue when I tried to take a ball in the air. I thought we played well at Arsenal, we did well as a team and I think we have great potential.
"I've only started two Premiership games and it's just what I expected it to be. It's a high standard and you have to be ready for every game, but they are the kind of matches you have to play in every week if you are going to improve."
