Costinha hospitalized with head injury

OPORTO, Portugal (AFP) - FC Porto captain Francisco Costinha remained in hospital after suffering a head injury during the team's 2-1 away loss to Vitoria Guimaraes in a Portuguese Cup match.

The 29-year-old international midfielder collapsed on the pitch after colliding with Vitoria midfielder Falvio Meireles in the 77th minute of Wednesday's match and had to be stretchered off the pitch.

Costinha briefly lost consciousness and suffered memory loss, the club said in a statement. "His clinical situation is evolving favourably and his prognosis is good," the statement added.

The player was first taken to a hospital in the northern city of Guimaraes before being moved to a private hospital in the country's second city Oporto.

i mean, why doesn't anyone comment on the agression that caused him to be hospitalized. people keep telling porto buys referees, what about this rugby referee that attended the match between porto and guimaraes? it was like wrestling rules out there, anything goes. diego and quaresma kept suffering fouls that weren't called, all game long, the pitch was like a hill and costinha was almost killed. the guy jumped knee capped costinha in the head, and he didn't even saw the yellow card, now that's what i call refereing, but since it wasn't against benfica no one spoke about that..

Ok and u cant forget the kick to Areias face. the player has like a broken nose and the referee still gave him a yellow for entering the pitch. What about Fernandez yellow, he was protesting because the ball clearly deflected off the Guimaraes player and went out but the refrees called it in posseion of Guimaraes. And Jorge Costas, he didnt offend no one by doing what he did, but the refree still has to give him a yellow.

HAHAHA now poor porto fans are crying because the ref didnt do his job.

hey its like you said after the porto x benfica match: ****e happens
it could have gone both ways. it could have been porto players kicking the other guys in the teeth as usual, and going unpunished...but not this time.

let them taste some of their own medicine. they deserve it. too bad the biggest thug, jorge costa got away unhurt. but there's allways more games

FC Porto will be without Costinha for two weeks after he sustained a head injury in a league game.

Head injury
The 29-year-old midfield player suffered concussion during Porto's Portuguese Cup fixture against Vitória SC in Guimarães on Wednesday. He has been effectively ruled out of next Tuesday's UEFA Champions League visit of Paris Saint-Germain FC, although his injury is less severe than initially feared.

Knocked out
A club statement said: "Costinha suffered a knock to the head and temporarily lost his senses during the match against Guimarães. After the incident the player had a cerebral scan and further examinations on his head and spine. No major injuries were detected and he has a good chance of making a full and speedy recovery."

nothing more? god are you biased or what. it was a plain agression, knee to the head, could've killed costinha, that's how serious that agression was, that wasn't to dispute the ball, nor nothing, plain agression, you benfica fans only see the fouls against simao

wtf was that really an agression? agreessions are the things that J.Costa, N.Valente, Derlei, Costinha and Maniche do, they attack players, Meireles was simply an accidental play

News on Costinha, from skysports.com

Porto captain Costinha is making good progress after being taken to hospital unconscious on Wednesday night.

The Portugal international was hospitalised after an incident in a Portuguese Cup game with Guimaraes.

The accident occurred in the 76th minute after a clash with Flavio Mendes.

However, Costinha subsequently regained consciousness and is expected to make a full and rapid recovery.

"His situation is favourable and the prognosis is good," a spokesperson said.

Hope he makes a fast and good recovery because we can certainly use his help in the midfield. Jorge Costa was getting all mad with Bosingwa because he would just float away from his position
