Edmílson out for at least six months

Three days at Asepeyo
Edmílson will be kept at Hospital Asepeyo in Sant Cugat for three days, and will then begin his recovery at the FC Barcelona Medical Services. The Brazilian, who has been accompanied at all times by his wife and his team mate Sylvinho, was relaxed but serene after an operation that took more than two and a half hours.
The operation on the Brazilian's right knee, which was injured against Numancia, was successful, but the sorry verdict is that Edmílson has the most serious of the three major injuries to first team players, and will be out for at least six months.
The operation was performed by Jordi Ardèvol, head of the FC Barcelona medical services, and Josep Maria Aguilera and Sergi Sánchez, of Hospital Asepeyo in Sant Cugat, where surgery took place. The first team doctor, Lluís Til, oversaw the process.
The operation in detail
Jordi Ardèvol supplied a full breakdown of the surgical procedure. "It consisted of arthroscopy to deal with the dislocation and breakage of the internal meniscus of the right knee. We then stitched the meniscus, and rebuilt the front ligament of the same knee, which arthroscopy had shown to have been damaged. This ligament was substituted with extracts from the tendons of the isquiotibial muscle".
Ardèvol went on to add that; "we preferred to use the isquiotibial tendons rather than those in the knee because the player has had other problems with his knee in the past".
According to the head of the club's medical service, the operation was especially urgent in order to "stitch the meniscus and save it, as it was badly dislocated and if you wait too long, you can lose it. So, once the meniscus had been operated on, and after observation, we decided it was a good time to deal with the ligaments too".
The worst case scenario
Jordi Ardèvol explained that the news for the Brazilian was about as bad as could have been expected. "He will be out for at least six months. This is a very serious injury, the worst of the serious ones we had to deal with this season. It is not the same as what Gabri and Motta have suffered, who are already well into their respective recovery processes."
