As an attempt to divulgate Brazilian Football (and to pressure the creation of sub-forums ), I'll try gradually to put info about the teams of the country, first the ones in the Brazilian Championship and then on..... Difficult task, since Brazil has listed (according to the Brazilian Confederation - CBF) over 500 teams (they don't have exact numbers). maybe there could have the same initiative by other members of other confederations.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, or better known as Pelè was born October 23rd 1940. He went on to become perhaps the best player of all time. He made his senior debut for Santos in 1956, a month before his 16th birthday and ten months later he played for Brazil against Argentina. Pelè missed the first two matches of the 1958 World Cup, before making his debut against Russia. His first World Cup goal came in the 1-0 quarter -final win over Wales and he scored a hat-trick in the semifinal against France and two more in the final over host nation Sweden. At 17, Pelé became the youngest ever winner of the World Cup.

Brazil defended the title four years later in Chile, but Pelé was injured early on and missed most of the tournament. Injuries also plagued him in 1966 as Brazil were eliminated already in the first round, but in 1970 he was back on top of his game leading Brazil to a record third title. Pelé was excellent and partnered by Rivelino, Jairzinho and Tostao, Brazil formed perhaps the best team ever.

Scoring goals was Pelè's trademark, but he was also a clever, quick-thinking player who could create goals for others. He scored a remarkable 77 goals for Brazil in 92 appearances, and various sources suggest that he netted 1281 in 1363 senior games overall. He played his final game for Santos in 1974, but was persuaded out of retirement the following year when he joined NASL club, New York Cosmos in a $4.000.000 deal. He played his last game for Cosmos in 1977 in front of 75.646 fans.

Pele has achieved more than any other player in the World Cup history. Surprisingly he hasn't been topscorer in either of the four World Cups he played in, but he is on third place of the all-time topscorers table with his 12 goals. His proudest record must be the fact that he is the only player who has won three World Cups.

Even though loosing 1 to 3 to Grêmio (RS - Ronaldinho's former team in Brazil), last wednesday, Santos is still the leader of the Brazilian championship - followed closely by São Paulo with 38 points - having scored 48 goals and allowed 33, while São Paulo scored 41 goals and also allowed 33.

Santos already lost Diego.. he has signed for Porto and is already in Portugal...

But they remain strong.. they have the best coach and their directors do a nice job in finding some good replacements...

They lost simply their entire midfield from when they were Brazilian champions.. Paulo Almeida, Renato and Diego...and lost the great defender Alex who went to PSV but there are quality players like Leo, Elano, Paulo Cesar, Deivid and Robinho and they are still leading the Brazilian League...

When Santos loses Robinho, it will be a major loss.. but they will still be a force.. this is my opinion...

Well, they already lost Diego, he was sold to Porto last week:

Champions League winners Porto have completed the signing of Brazilian international Diego on a five-year contract.

The 19-year-old has cost the Portuguese giants 7million euros and could be seen as a replacement for Deco, who joined Barcelona earlier this summer.

Diego has been tipped to be the next big thing to come out of Brazil since guiding Santos to the Brazilian championship when he was just 17. He suffered a dip in form, but played a part in Brazil's recent Copa America triumph.

The playmaker had been close to joining Tottenham before a problem with the youngsters passport scuppered a move.

Robinho is going to be harder since Santos has raised his salary and made more difficult to break his contract.

Very contradictory coach, one of the most succesful coaches in Brazil, yet has been involved in several polemical cases such as problems with the IRS and accusations of sexual harassment.
He was last year national champion with Cruzeiro, and moved to Santos FC 3 months ago, replacing coach Leão who ironicly moved to Cruzeiro (Leão left Cruzeiro last month)

Zé Elias is back to the Brazilian football after 8 years in European football (Olympiacos, Intenationaly, Bayer Leverkusen, etc). He intends to start playing within 20 days.

This is a mystery. Spurs offered US$12m to Santos for their creative midfielder Diego a year ago, of which Santos would keep 60 per cent. Santos refused, saying that it wanted US$15m. Now, a year later, Porto offered $10m and Santos accepted, even they only get 50 per cent of the fee.
