Forest have been linked with a move for Luton Town midfielder Matthew Spring.
The 24-year-old, who has made 250 appearances for the Hatters, is available on a free transfer. He is stalling on a new offer from the club.
Spring is a creative midfielder who played a prominent part when Joe Kinnear led the Hatters to promotion from Division Three two years ago.
Leeds United, who have made five signings already this summer, are also understood to be interested in him.
Reds boss Kinnear will look at his midfield as a priority now it seems Gareth Williams is leaving for Leicester City.
Luton manager Mike Newell said: "I am not holding my breath about him signing. I am convinced he will go to Forest or Leeds if they make an offer , and I'm sure they will."
Kinnear is abroad until pre-season training next week.
