SPL give groundshares the go-ahead

SPL give groundshares the go-ahead
Tuesday, 30 March 2004

by Steve Luckings
The Scottish Premier League have given the green light to proposals for clubs to share grounds.

Edinburgh club Hearts are set to play their games at Rugby stadium Murrayfield while Dundee and Dundee United will share The Terrors' home of Tannadice.

In addition to this, if Dens Park comes under new ownership, Dundee would be given approval to remain at Dens Park subject to a contract being in position by 30 May 2004, but Dundee's application for a waiver in relation to undersoil heating was declined.

Applications from Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Clyde for a period of grace to meet the SPL's stadia criteria were declined. However, if Clyde win promotion they have been given the go-ahead to play at Rugby Park, home of Kilmarnock, and Falkirk will be allowed to play at Dunfermline. The agreements are subject to legally binding contracts which must be in place by the deadline of 30 May 2004.

Official statement....

The following decisions regarding Stadia proposals that the SPL received from various clubs were made at today’s SPL General Meeting:
Approval was given to Heart of Midlothian FC’s application to groundshare at Murrayfield for season 2004/05, subject to a legally binding contract being in place between Heart of Midlothian FC and the SRU by the 30th of May, 2004.

It was agreed that Dundee FC could use Tannadice Park as their registered ground for season 2004/05, subject to a legally binding contract being in place between Dundee FC and Dundee United FC by the 30th of May, 2004. In addition to this, if Dens Park comes under new ownership, Dundee FC would be given approval to remain at Dens Park again subject to a contract being in position by the 30th May, 2004.

Falkirk FC’s proposal to groundshare with Dunfermline Athletic FC at East End Park, if promoted to the SPL, for season 2004/05 was also approved. Once again, this is subject to a legally binding contract being in place between Falkirk FC and Dunfermline Athletic FC by the 30th of May, 2004.

Applications from Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC and Clyde FC for a period of grace to meet the SPL’s Stadia Criteria were declined.

Clyde FC also applied for approval for a groundsharing arrangement with Kilmarnock FC at Rugby Park. This was approved by the SPL subject to a legally binding contract between Clyde FC and Kilmarnock FC being in place by 30th of May, 2004.

In every case the required legally binding contract is subject to verification and approval by the SPL. Clubs are only allowed one registered ground in any one season. All groundsharing arrangements that were approved will therefore apply for the entirety of season 2004/05.

Dundee FC’s application for a waiver in relation to undersoil heating was declined.

well, italy (AC Milan and Inter in Milan, Lazio and AS Rome in Rome, Juve and Torino in Torino, among others)

You have some in spain too, altough i'm pretty positive that Real Betis and Sevilla play in separated stadia.

It might be a way to simply cut the costs of maintenance in half...

Nobody want to groundshare.

It's just a forced hand.

Hearts can't afford Murrayfield so they need to move. Dundee can't afford Dens, and anything else for that fact so they have to become our tennents. Clyde need a stadium which meets SPL criteria if they are to be promoted, as do Falkirk.

I have a question that maybe weebully would be able to answer, on reading this official statement it says Falkirk would share if promoted, yet nothing about Clyde doing this if promoted. So even if you don't go up would you still be renting Rugby Park next season.
