Aston Villa are closing in on a swoop for highly-rated Heerenveen striker Marcus Allbäck, according to club scout Bryan King.
Several scouts were in Oslo to see Sweden draw 0-0 with Norway on Wednesday including Villa's King - who had a special brief to follow Allbäck.
The forward has a clause in his deal that allows him to leave Heerenveen for a cut-price fee and numerous clubs have been keeping tabs on him in recent months.
King said: "We are close to signing a contract with him. He is a good guy who has his feet on the ground. He knows what he wants.
"Our manager Graham Taylor likes Scandinavians because of their good attitude."
Allbäck has previously been a target for Southampton and Sunderland, but Villa now appear to have taken the lead in the race for his signature.
They have reportedly offered around £3million for the forward. Heerenveen, however, are thought to be holding out for more.

We may be in Div 1, we may have looked like the most innept team in the division for the last 4 weeks, we may have bought Joachim.
BUT at least we've accepted that we're not a massive club and we're not running around telling people we're one of the big 6.
Even you're own supporters are starting to wake up to the situation. Every Vile home game I see on the box, there seem to be more and more empty seats.
Accept the fact that you're a mid table premiership team who may win a cup every 10 years or so, or possibly play in the Inter-Two-Bob Cup from time to time.

Brummies by nature are fatalists, the only person who believes Villa are a big club is Doug Eliis, until he goes nothing will change. In fact I believe we will be struggling to stay up next season. We were sixth in the league when Gregory left and now we will be lucky to finish twelfth.

Gotta agree with Sky Blue Matt on this one, most of the Villa fans that I know, spoken to or read on message boards like this really do over rate Aston Villa. Over the last few years you have gotten by on Gregory and his will to win through a organised bunch, not great quality but a battle for every ball. I hate watching ya play (and obviously so do ya fans looking at the ground every week) and it is a shame really. The signing of Schimeichal at the time showed ya ambition and the expected departure of Hendrie, a bright inventive young player, see's everything that you should try and keep and build around go to to pot.

bloody hell u all seem to hate villa, he had to sign strikers because of the "departure" of Angel but since he is not goin we have a healthy competition for places, i agree that the midfeild is a bit crap, and as for the bright hendrie, he is the biggest load of S**T ever 5 million would be good for him! the team was boring when gregory was around but now the new manager is in they seem to attack so fingers crossed for a good season

Is it the ol' long ball game with the "new" manager now then?

The attacking side certainly done themselves proud in the Intertoto Cup eh...
