Pompey close in on Berkovic
Tuesday, 30 December 2003

Manchester City playmaker Eyal Berkovic is close to joining Portsmouth, according to Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric.

The Israel international has made just nine appearances for City so far this season and Kevin Keegan would not mind him leaving the City of Manchester Stadium.

Fratton Park boss Harry Redknapp is a keen admirer of Berkovic after managing him at West Ham and is looking to renew acquaintances.

Pompey chairman Mandaric now says that they are close to sealing a move for the former Celtic man.

"There are a few more things to solve, so we will only know in a few days' time," Mandaric told Ha'aretz.

"The manager Harry Redknapp is extremely interested in Berkovic, and has only good things to say about him from the time he coached him at West Ham.

"As far as it depends on me, Berkovic is close to signing with Portsmouth.

"We are in a tough situation and need points in the bag. Berkovic can definitely help create goalscoring opportunities and points."

Berkovic may find a compatriot with him upon his arrival on the South Coast, with fellow Israeli Tal Ben Haim also interesting the club.

The Maccabi Tel Aviv skipper was due to attend a trial at Blackburn Rovers but had to cancel due to flu, but could still earn a move to The Premiership.

Portsmouth may pick up where Rovers left off and will be able to take him to England should they stump up the cash.

also in the daily express

Well yeh i agree bry Dunne is our best player at the moment, the guy is on fire.

And im saying in my own opinion that Berkovich is our best player the guy is a magician and can just find a killer pass out of anything.

rednapp is only looking for FREE transfers or loan players as they have no money to spend at the moment,so unless eyal goes on a free he aint going to pompey.

cost of making up with eyal - nothing bar some pride

cost of buying steve mcmanaman, trv sinclair and antoine sibierski - £3.25m plus wages

i know which one i would have gone for but oh well.

obviously im gutted but if he goes lets atleast try and get a good deal for the club, too many times when buying and selling players we havent fought hard enough to get good prices, im sure with some bartering the £5m for Macken and £6m for Fowler could have been reduced as we were the only tea interested in signing both of em.
