Ze Roberto banned for three games for kicking opponent

BERLIN, (Reuters) - The German football association (DFB) on Monday banned Bayern Munich's Brazilian striker Ze Roberto for three games for kicking Bayer Leverkusen's Lucio in their 3-3 draw on Saturday.

Ze Roberto was sent off in the 57th minute for a challenge on his former team mate. Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has said the dismissal was a wrong decision.

Bayern were trailing 2-1 at the time but scored two goals to take a 3-2 lead before Leverkusen grabbed a late equaliser.

HE DID NOT KICK LUCIO!!!! HE WANTED TO KICK HIM, BUT HE GOT AWAY BEFORE HE COULD "DO" HIM!!!!

So it was only an attempt, same as Viera´s dissmeasall, he only tried to kick him, but he didnt even touched him, while RVn should get a yelow card for jumping on him!!!

I must say I watched the game and the replay and couldnt see the kick actually happen

I think they got this wrong...

I SAW THE KICK AND I THINK HE DESERVES THE RED CARD , BUT I DESAGREE WITH THE 3 GAMES SUSPENSION....

He raised his leg but didnt make contact...

Yes, he only raised his leg, while contact-foul never happened!!!

A yellow card would be enough...

Wonder with who we will be playing on his position, Feulner or Hargreaves if Jaremies comes back???

Ref got it wrong, says Hitzfeld

The day after being shown a red card for the first time in 150 Bundesliga appearances – an this against his former club as well - Zé Roberto looked as puzzled as he had done on Saturday afternoon.

"I just don't understand, it was nothing, not even a foul," the Brazilian said on Sunday. The incident took place in the 57th minute as the Bayern winger challenged fellow countryman Lucio, only to receive his marching orders from referee Florian Meyer. The match official had punished what he claimed was "definite retaliation" on Zé's part.

"I still think it was the wrong decision. There was no intent, it was a reflex reaction," commented coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, deeply unhappy at Meyer's decision which meant the home side played the last half-hour with only ten men.

Visiting coach Klaus Augenthaler sympathised with his opposite number. "If there's going to be a red card for every foul like that, we'll end up playing three against three," the former Bayern captain observed wryly. Added Zé Roberto: "I'd have been fine with a booking. But a red card?"

The Brazilian will definitely receive a ban, probably covering two or three games. As Sebastian Deisler and Mehmet Scholl are both sidelined with torn muscles, Hitzfeld will be without three key figures in attacking midfield. "I just hope I'm not suspended for too long," Zé commented.

Just because you raise a limb in an upward direction doesnt mean you wish to kick/punch someone....

Brazil star Zé Roberto, normally in the headlines exclusively for his deeds on the field of play, has suddenly become the focus of German media attention after collecting a three-match ban for his first-ever sending off and then being linked with a surprise move away from Bayern and the Bundesliga.

In his 150th German top flight appearnace against former club Bayer Leverkusen last Saturday, the winger was adjudged to have lashed out at fellow-countryman Lucio and saw a straight red card.

A German Football Association (DFB) tribunal handed the 29 year-old a three-match ban on Monday, and Zé will now miss this Saturday's trip to Hansa Rostock, the visit of Hertha Berlin on 4 October and the away clash with Borussia Monchengladbach two weeks later.

"It's sad I've got a three-match ban for a spot of handbags," the player said after Tuesday training at the Säbener Strasse. "There was contact between me and Lucio, but I don't believe it was a red card offence, and definitely not a three-match ban. I'd have accepted a yellow card without complaint."

Zé reported that referee Florian Meyer sought out Lucio after the final whistle and asked him what actually happened. "Lucio said 'nothing happened'," the Bayern man reported, but that was his last word on the first sending-off of his career: "I need to put it behind me, learn from it and look ahead to the future."

Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld and Bayern manager Uli Hoeneß condemned the severe penalty. "It's a great shame," Hoeneß said, describing the ban as "a very harsh punishment, but that's what's in the rule book nowadays." The club would not be appealing against the ban: "The video evidence isn't clear enough."

"I won't be fining him," coach Hitzfeld said, "I've taken another look at it, I didn't see retaliation, so we won't be penalising him further." German referees were often "far too pernickety," Hitzfeld complained, "and then suddenly it's a totally different ball game in the Champions League."

Zé Roberto spent Tuesday emphatically denying 'Zé to quit' reports conjured up from a throwaway comment he made on Bavarian TV the previous evening. "I don't know where to go from here. If you're getting sent off for something as petty as that, you've got to be looking at other countries with a different culture, where you have the chance to keep on playing and not be given your marching orders," he was reported as saying on Blickpunkt Sport.

"I was probably trying to say that if the ref shows a red card after a minor collision, I ought to change sport," Zé commented with a heavy dose of irony, "karate perhaps. I'm not sure whether I'd be very successful though, I'm short and thin."

The mazy dribbler insisted he was not looking for a way out of the Bundesliga and Bayern: "I've been in Germany for five years, I've got used to the quality of life and the climate, my son was born here, my wife loves it. I'm extremely happy in Munich."

He would be moving on, but only at the end of his career: "Back to Brazil," he declared. However, there was still one mission to accomplish: "I've already realised dreams here in Munich, I've won the championship and the Cup. Now my dream is to win the Champions League."
