The culture barrier is as big as it gets in football in terms of the difference between the SPL and RPL. Football in Russia is going to go one of two ways, either the state subsidies are going to dry up and the likes of Rubin, Terek, Luch and Saturn will collapse or they're going to kick on from the performances of CSKA in the UCL and really begin to be a force in Europe.

He could do a lot worse than Spartak, they're a better footballing option than a mid table premiership side - I can't see him overcoming the cultural differences and being a success though of he were to make that move.

Celtic close to agreeing Ł9.5m deal with Spartak Moscow for Aiden McGeady

CELTIC are at an advanced stage of talks with Spartak Moscow over a s9.5million transfer for Aiden McGeady.
Hoops chief executive Peter Lawwell has held detailed discussions with the Russian club's sporting director, Evgeny Smolentsev, who flew in on Tuesday to thrash out a deal. These two have a close relationship after spending time together on different UEFA committees.
McGeady has been on Spartak's radar for two months and they have now stepped up their efforts to lure him to Russia.

It's understood McGeady was not keen on the move as his preference is the English Premiership. Aston Villa, Sunderland, Everton and Birmingham are known admirers. However, the feedback from down south is that the most clubs would be willing to pay is s7.5m and that isn't acceptable to Celtic.
This has limited McGeady's options and he may now have to speak to Spartak about a four-year contract worth in the region of s45,000 a week.
I will be quite surprised if he does move to Moscow!

Likewise, doesn't seem to be the move he's looking for, but he has made it clear to Celtic that he's looking for a new challenge, and he's fast running out of options. I really hope this deal can be done in time for us to address the serious concerns highlighted by Wednesday night's defeat.

Can't see why he'd want to do it...but if so Cash + Stipe would work for me.

Seems like he wants a move, but nobody bar Spartak want to match the price. He was probably expecting a few clubs from England to join in.

In todays scottish sun....

Quote:
AIDEN McGEADY will fly to Moscow tomorrow as he edges closer to quitting Celtic in a record-breaking Ł9.5million deal.
The wantaway winger will travel to Russia with his agent and girlfriend for talks.

Cash-rich Spartak have agreed a deal with Celts and are ready to hand the 24-year-old more than Ł40,000-a-week to leave his boyhood heroes.

McGeady, who missed the thrilling 3-2 Emirates Cup defeat to Arsenal yesterday, is believed to be warming to the prospect of a move to Spartak.

He WON'T start in the Champions League qualifier against Braga on Wednesday and looks as if he's played his last Celts game.

Apparently, he'll get a massive chunk of change too if he signs with them as opposed to an EPL team.

This move is all about the money, it's not really a step forward, but hey everyone is in the game for different reasons.

Aye due to the difference in Tax laws he'll be making a lot more than he would going down to England.

I think he may end up going and I'd quite happily take the 9mill for him.

If he does go I don't see him lasting very long in that enviroment.

Celtic's Aiden McGeady returns from Spartak talks

Celtic winger Aiden McGeady is returning to Scotland after talks with Russian club Spartak Moscow.

He is considering a move to the Russian Premier League side after Celtic accepted a bid of about Ł9.5m.

BBC Scotland has learned the Republic of Ireland international will make a decision on his future soon.

McGeady, 24, was absent from Wednesday's Champions League qualifier second leg against Braga in Glasgow, which Celtic lost 4-2 on aggregate.
Manager Neil Lennon said on Tuesday that he hoped McGeady's future would be resolved quickly, so that he can progress the rebuilding of his squad.

"This has dragged on a bit longer than what we wanted," said Lennon.
"I'd like to think that we would get a definitive idea after this. What comes in goes back out on the football side of things, that's been made clear."

The Republic of Ireland winger signed a five-year deal in 2008 and did not feature in the first leg of Celtic's Champions League qualifier, possibly because participation would have ruled him out of any forthcoming European ties.

Lennon is keen to strengthen his squad before the start of the Scottish Premier League season and plans to use some of the funds generated by McGeady's sale.

"It's up to me whether I want to spend that amount or not," he added.

"I think we need a couple of areas to improve the squad but I don't think it will take all that money to do that."

The winger has been struggling with injuries in pre-season but featured in the 2-2 draw against Lyon in the Emirates Cup on Saturday.

Lennon has praised McGeady for his displays for Celtic and said he would grace any league in the world.

"He's in a difficult situation at the minute and I've been there myself towards the end of my time at Leicester and the interest from Celtic," Lennon added.

"Your head's all over the place and I think he's in that place at the minute."

The fee is the only plus side about this, and whats to say we would not piss it away on average players. Im caring less and less on which way this swings but he needs to make a decision.

Spartak though, really? They have the money, but in terms of status they are not above Celtic.

The attraction for Aiden may be that he will make mega bucks and by a stretch the most talented and noticed player within the squad (More so than he is at Celtic).

In turn might leave him with a very good financial situation and then more clubs coming in for him in the future.

Aiden McGeady completes record move to Spartak Moscow

Its officially signed and sealed....

BBC

Quote:

Aiden McGeady has completed his Ł9.5m switch from Celtic to Spartak Moscow and agreed a four-and-half-year contract with the Russian club. The 24-year-old Republic of Ireland midfielder is the most expensive ever export from Scottish football.
"It's what he wanted to do and sometimes you can't stand in the way of that," said Celtic boss Neil Lennon.
"It's a huge offer and I think it's the right offer. It's good business for Spartak and good business for us."
McGeady's departure will provide Lennon with funds to bolster his squad and may see Celtic revive their interest in Stoke winger Liam Lawrence.
The money generated from the record transfer could also help facilitate a loan move for Manchester City forward Craig Bellamy.
However, speaking on Thursday, the manager expressed sadness at losing such a talented player.
"I'm sorry to lose him, he is one of the entertainers in the game," said Lennon.
"We'll probably miss out on his peak years but he came to us and said that he felt at the end of the season it would be better for him to move on.
"It's difficult to stand in the way of someone who doesn't want to be here."
One player hoping to benefit from McGeady's exit is Pat McCourt, a winger who has been on the fringes of the first team for two seasons now.
"We've probably lost the best player in the league," said the Northern Ireland international of McGeady.
"I'm sure it's going to be a big hole. But it's up to someone to step up to the plate and fill it.
"It's up to whoever gets a shout and gets the jersey to hold on to it, and I'm hoping it'll be me. This year's the year I really want to kick on and be a regular in the side."
Spartak, managed by former Russian World Cup star Valery Karpin, lie in eighth position in the Russian Premier League, having won only five of their 15 matches.

At the very least get a LB who somewhat competent! I'm sure Charlie Mulgrew is a good bloke but he's rank!

I wish McGeady all the best. An very frustrating player to watch at times, but there is no doubt that the bhoy has skill.

Lets not kid anyone on here folks....McGeady didn't go to Russia for the football, He didn't go for the culture (he's fae the toon chr*st) He didn't go for the weather(he can freeze his spuds off here and heat up in those sunbeds he loves) He purely and simply went for the ca$h....He fancied the EPL but they rejected his overtures and after sayin to everyone that would listen that he wanted to leave he had to go somewhere and the rushskies were offering silly money and he'll be there the same length of time as O'Connor and come to england for a cut price.

Lets just hope that Lennon uses the money wisely and buys a LB, a CB and a GK.

Fingers Crossed folks!!

The Russian league, just as in Ukraine, has no appeal other than the cash on offer. Most who go never settle properly in any case and end up coming back soon enough.

McGeady is totally overhyped IMO, I can't believe they'd pay so much for him.
