The Injury Thread 2010/11

Bit of news already.

Wonder if Sir Alex will keep him or look to sell him.

BBC

Quote:
Manchester United striker Michael Owen is confident he will be able to take a full part in pre-season training after recovering from his hamstring injury.

He has not played since pulling his hamstring in United's 2-1 Carling Cup final win over Aston Villa in February.

But an operation has been a success and he is looking forward to United's pre-season tour, which begins on 12 July.

"The aim is to be doing everything with the lads on the first day of pre-season training," he said.

"It was a shame to get the injury at Wembley. I thought it was a minor thing at first but it was obviously worse than that.

"But overall I was delighted with my first season at United. I was fit for 43 of the first 44 games."

I also saw a report saying Valencia might struggle to make the start of next season due to needing ankle surgery.

Not seen anything on the official website or anywhere else. Also heard that Sir Alex let him take his summer holiday early as he wasn't involved in the last two games of the season.

That makes me believe it is bull****.

After saying that, just seen this from Ben Hibbs on Twitter.

Rio confirmed to be staying in England and not going back to SA.

Wonder how Hargreaves is doing...?

MICHAEL OWEN and Owen Hargreaves have given Manchester United a massive boost by declaring themselves fit for pre-season training.

The first-team squad - excluding the World Cup stars - are due back on July 5 but both Owen and Hargreaves have already been in at the Red Devils' Carrington training ground to work with the fitness team.

Owen has worked ferociously to recover from the knee injury that cut short his season.

The United staff have been impressed with his dedication and are convinced he is ready to take a full part in pre-

season and the club's tour of America and Canada.

Owen will be joined by Hargreaves, who is over his 20-month injury crisis.

The England midfielder managed a brief end-of-season bow against Sunderland after crippling tendinitis threatened his career.

He has recently returned from a trip to Colorado, where he continues to receive treatment.

But there have been no ill-effects and Hargreaves has been able to maintain a high-intensity training programme through the summer, much to the relief of manger Sir Alex Ferguson and England boss Fabio Capello.

Capello even considered Hargreaves as part of the pre-World Cup party until Fergie made it clear the player was not match-fit.

The FA's medical staff, however, have been monitoring his fitness with Capello pencilling Hargreaves in for an international return in September for the start of the Euro 2012 qualifiers.

I knew that whole 4 month thing was absolute bollocks.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand could be fit for the club's Premier League opener against Newcastle United on 14th August.

It had been feared the knee injury sustained by the centre-back while on England duty in South Africa this summer could force him out of the Magpies clash.

The 31-year-old damaged knee ligaments in training ahead of England's opener against USA and it was thought he would be sidelined for some time.

However, a club spokesman has confirmed the Red Devils estimate a 10-week absence, meaning he could be fit to face Newcastle.

Should Ferdinand fall behind his recovery schedule then manager Sir Alex Ferguson has the option of delaying his comeback to the second weekend of the season against Fulham.

I did say in that other thread I didn't think 4 months is true.

Rio has a twitter account and has so far kept us all up to date with how he is getting along with the injury, and said nothing about 4 months

He said yesterday he was back in Carrington to start pre season, not the same as the other players as he can't do the football bit yet, but he is back at the club

Gary Neville will miss Manchester United's pre-season tour of America after sustaining a small tear in his calf muscle.

The veteran defender was set to play a part in United's preparations for the new season next month, but will now remain at the club's Carrington training ground base instead of flying out to Chicago on Monday.

The 35-year-old's knock is thought to only be a minor setback and he will be rested to prepare for the start of the Premier League in August.

It will come as a blow to the player after recovering from a series of injuries to finish strongly at Old Trafford after being offered a one-year extension to his deal as his career winds down.

Neville joins England captain Rio Ferdinand on the treatment table, who was unable to play any part in his country's World Cup campaign after injuring his knee in their first training session before the tournament.

United will face Celtic in their opening game of their tour in Toronto next Friday, with several first-team players, including new signings Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez, joining the party.

With the new 25 man squad limit, its ridiculous having 4+ injury prone players on that list - Hargreaves, Owen, Rio and Neville. Then when you add in Anderson etc, its very risky going into a long hard season with a squad like that.

Great

It is going to be another season like the one just gone. Luckily we've got someone in Evans who can just step in and do the job. That Vidic deal is even better now hearing this news.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand faces another six weeks on the sidelines, according to manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 31-year-old centre-half suffered a major blow ahead of the World Cup when he was ruled out of the tournament after sustaining a knee ligament injury in training.

He is now expected to be out until September, meaning he will miss the start of United's Premier League campaign and is doubtful for England's Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland.

Ferguson said: "Rio should be six weeks, I think. It was a ligament injury after all."

Ferdinand had been tipped to recover in time for the Red Devils' league opener with Newcastle on 16th August, but could now miss games against Fulham and West Ham.

He will certainly miss England's friendly clash with Hungary at Wembley, as he tries to overcome the latest of a raft of fitness problems that have frustrated him in recent years.

Meanwhile, United will be boosted by the news that Gary Neville returned to training on Friday, although Michael Owen is not expected to be fit for the season opener.

Ferdinand
Owen
Hargreaves
Anderson

Possibly Rooney, Vidic, Park, Evra, Carrick.

All those missing for the first game. Although WC players will probably play.

Am I missing anyone?

Rio being out for longer is kinda good imo. Don't want to rush him back for the start of the season and then have him go away on England duty and get injured again.

Obertan out for two weeks with ankle injury.

Not the worst news but still gutted for him. Hopefully make the first game on the bench.

Carrick to miss start of season with ankle injury, couple weeks out apparently.

Obertan still out with ankle injury too.

Rio a few weeks away with Hargreaves still in the US.

Anderson apparently could be back in training in two to three weeks.

Rafael and Fabio got food poisoning.

We have Scholes, Gibson, Fletcher and Cleverley available so no danger yet.

Would have loved to see him up and running after his decent Pre Season, but with Cleverley, Nani, Park and Giggs all able to play on the left we'll be fine.

Evans, Sheasy, Brown and Smalling will fill the gap for the time being. Never really figured Hargo in the equation so makes no difference really.

As long as we've got Sheasy, Evra and De Laet available on the left side we won't miss Fabio much. Rafael is a bit of a blow, maybe we'll see Evans, Brown or Sheasy on the right?

Not really an injury, but Evra was given some extra time off because he played so many games last season, so may not be picked for a while yet.

Good. We need him in good shape come business end of the season.

Wish Fabio gets better soon. Perfect chance to impress.

Yeah. I know he is considered by many (including me) to be one of our most important players, but I hope he doesn't play as much this year as he has the past couple of years - two seasons ago he was physically burnt out by March and though the effect wasn't quite as bad last season there was a definite drop in his performances toward the end of the season. Hopefully we'll have more luck with injuries and be able to rest him in the less important games from time to time.

We really need to be giving Fabio more opportunities, but he always gets injured :/
