Acquafresca To Play For Poland At Euro 2008?

Acquafresca To Play For Poland At Euro 2008?
Cagliari star Robert Acquafresca could play for Poland at Euro 2008, according to Tuttosport.

What is unknown to many people is that Acquafresca’s mother is actually full Polish, having only moved to Italy in 1978 due to work. For this reason her son is eligible to play for the Poland national team.

Tuttosport says that Poland manager Leo Beenhakker has been trying to persuade Acquafresca to agree to play for his side at Euro 2008.

The striker, who is co-owned by Inter, is said to be flattered and is considering the proposal.

If Acquafresca, who speaks Polish, was to heed to Beenhakker’s wishes, it would undoubtedly be a huge blow for Italy Under-21 boss Pierluigi Casiraghi, who was planning to take the hitman to this summer’s Olympics.

Acquafresca has scored three goals in Serie A this season from 22 appearances. He has also hit the back of the net five times in seven Under-21 appearances.

According to Polish links it wasn't Benhakker who asked him but Michał Globisz (Poland's youth team coach).
Anyway in an interview for The Times Poland he said that it's a hard decision as Italy and Poland both mean much to him.

'If I would been called up for Poland's squad, I'd be proud' - Which doesn't mean of course, that he'd agree

89% of online poll respondents voted for calling him up.

In my opinion, it lookes like he's a little surprised with the matter and trying to be polite, but he'd prefer Italy (for obvious reason I think).

Never knew of his Polish links before.

I hope he sticks with the Azzurri though.

A great career ahead of him.

He wants to play for Italy.

Robert Acquafresca has thanked Poland for their interest in taking him to Euro 2008, but will wait for an Italy cap.

The Cagliari hitman’s mother Eva is Polish and the FA showed an interest this week in taking him to this summer’s tournament.

That's natural. He lived there all the time. Good luck, Roberto!
