Nugent the answer?

Quote:
£6million Nugent to boost Manchester City?
12:05 March, 14, 2007
Manchester City Football Club are keen to win the race for David Nugent.

The Preston North End striker has become one of the hottest properties outside of The Premiership this season, and is a target for a number of clubs in the top-flight.

The latest of these is City, whose manager Stuart Pearce has been less than impressed with the current crop of forwards at Eastlands who have been misfiring all season.

Indeed, the Blues are in dire relegation trouble as the league campaign enters its business end, and if they avoid the drop, Pearce will launch a £6million bid for Nugent to avoid a repeat of their troubles this term.
Probably just news for the sake of news, but I thought it was worth bringing up in order to see what people's opinions are on which direction we should move in over summer in regard to signing a striker?

Of the ones we have, I'd keep Samaras (surely he has to come good?) and Mpenza (no particular reason other than we can't sack all our strikers....can we?)...in the transfer market in this day and age, getting a proven goalscorer is going to be in excess of £6m...so I don't see that being a problem, from what I have seen of the lad, he does look to be in the same mould as Ashton in regard to having the attributes to make the step up...Mido and Nugent for £8m sounds better than Corradi and Samaras for £8m

true...I just put him in there because it looks like Pearce will go for him regardless....

The maths doesn't add up when you look at it that way; but when you consider the fact that we got screwed over Anelka and he is worth more than that then its more a reflection on how the poor the business was in selling him compared to the cost of buying a striker these days.

Johnson, Ashton and Beattie have all moved for around that price though in recent seasons. You're looking at nearly £10m for someone of say Berbatov's quality from abroad, and far more if you're buying from an English club.

Other options are Sharp, Mcleod, Eastwood, and Varney from the lower leauges...and I haven't seen enough of them to comment, but judging by the media circus around any move for them then you're looking at around the same money especially for at least 2 of them.

Nugent would be well worth the £6million pop. Completely different player to Ashton though; He's quick, runs at defenders, down the channels and packs one hell of a shot. Scores all types of goals, which is generally a good sign when you're asking a player to step-up a league.

Eastwood is of a similar ilk, but much quicker - but less proven. Plus he's a pikey.

Mcleod on the other hand is hardly setting League Two alight, and will probably spend more time suspended for sendings off, than actually playing the game. He's not worth anything near £1million. A very very, poor man's Darren Bent with a serious chip on his shoulder.

Yeah...my valuations were a bit high, but for Nugent then I would think £4-6m would be about right in the current context.

Sharp and Eastwood for about £1-2m and then Mcleod for less than £1m

Until we start creating chances for the strikers then it doesn't matter who we have although it would help is we had a striker who'd get in to decent positions from to time but whether we'd find them with a pass is another thing.

Nugent seems a decent player. He could manage better without the type of service that Corradi clearly needs. I have no idea where the 6 million would come from - but obviously it should have been spent at the beginning of the season or January, unless it is dependent upon 'the takeover'. I would hope that anyone we sell too is a prepared to put up a bit more dosh than that - in fact I think Makin has already stated he won't sell unless the buying party can put in some reasonable investment - which is the right idea.

In many ways, whilst things haven't gone well, all the current management seem quite decent people. Isn't it always the way ....... they should have known they were DOOMED!

like ash says until the midfield fullbacks start creating something for the strikers id rather keep our money or even spend that on 2 quality wingers

im happy with our strikeforce cause i firmly believe when they are given the right balls they will do what their here for and thats to score goals

Again last night we created very little despite the impressive movement of Mpenza.

Barton should have played Samaras in... instead of trying to shoot from 25 yds towards the end.....

Have we won a game since Barton came back from his suspension?

Nope we haven't but i don't think thats the issue i think the main reason why we haven't won a game since New Years Day in the premiership is that Nedum Onahua has been injured.

He was the main reason why we managed to pick up 3 wins on the bounce over christmas and not because Barton wasn't in the team.

Bang on Mr Hudson, everyone seems to be complaining about our strikeforce (it is sh1t mind) but our midfield creates nothing at all.
We have no one at the club to play the final killer pass

Exactly.

We have no width and as you've said no one with the killer pass.

At one point last night as Groucho mentioned in another thread we had 3 on 2 and all Barton had to do was play in Samaras and instead he shot from 25 yards and it rolled wide.

Poor decision making from the midfield most of the time and poor passing the rest of the time.

I actually thought when Miller came on last night he did quite well and at least he added a bit of width to the team.

Thats that thing though mate he comes on plays ok but will he start on Saturday? Probably not.

Earlier in the season when we played West Ham at home and won 2-0 and Ish made the first goal with a superb run and generally played well he was dropped for the next game and thats poor management for me because if you play well then you should start the next game regardless of whether it's against Chelsea away or Watford at home.

Yep!!

Thats the same game Samaras scored 2... then was dropped for four games for the prolific Mr Corradi.

Something's wrong somewhere!

Also Samaras comes on against Everton scores 2 and then follows it up with a goal against Sheffield Wednesday away in the cup yet come the Bolton game after it he's dropped to the bench.

Will do wonders for his confidence that.

Yeh i think it's nailed on for Nugent to go there. His boyhood club and he keeps saying how much he'd love to play there.

Mido may be the target man you guys need, he did well for us last season with Keane...this season he's 4th choice, has been injured a lot and is not in match shape, but he still has a couple of goals to his name.

To be fair, that may be because of the service to him, no disrespect to City but your midfield create nothing at all, Mpenza was running left and right adding people into the game but never seemed to get the ball back.

Been saying this all season, especially about the wingers. I think it was before transfer window when it was said that its quite worrying that the club only owns one winger in the form of Sinclair! It showed last night, although we didn't create chances per se there was a lot of balls being put into the box. Chelsea defended well though, and ironically we could have done with Corradi in there somewhere.

Would be happy to see the same line-up against Boro...
