Brazil full-back Roberto Carlos has been provisionally suspended from international football by FIFA for allegedly pushing referee Alon Yefet in his country's 2-1 friendly defeat by Portugal in Porto.

Israeli Yefet, who sent the player off during the match, claimed the Real Madrid player deliberately barged him and now the Brazilian has been suspended pending a disciplinary hearing.

The matter will be dealt with at the next meeting of FIFA's disciplinary committee on a date yet to be set.

The FIFA statement made it clear that `any attack on a referee is to be regarded as a serious matter'.

The body added that FIFA disciplinary committee chairman Marcel Mathier can impose a provisional punishment `in cases where it is likely an offence was committed'.

TV pictures of the friendly showed the Brazilian run towards Yefet, with his shoulder appearing to make contact with the official.

The decision can be appealed against before midnight on Wednesday and is valid for all matches involving the Brazil national team whether friendly or competitive.

FIFA have previously taken a hard line on any offence where the referee is considered to have been assaulted.

Roberto Carlos insisted that his barge on referee Alon Yefet which earned him a red card in Brazil's defeat to Portugal was accidental.

The World Cup winner said he had no regrets over the incident and did not apologise to the Israeli official - because it was accidental.

And though Sir Alex Ferguson called for UEFA to ban the Real Madrid defender, Carlos said calls for a suspension are groundless.

The Brazil star, who defended his disciplinary record after his first red card for his country in his 94th cap, is bemused by the attention the incident has brought him.

'I have seen the incident on the television and do not understand why it is causing such a problem,' he told Soccernet's Kevin Palmer.

'I never tried to hit the official and there is no need to apologise. I have no regrets. Anyway, my disciplinary record in the game has always been good. I play and fight for every ball, even if it is a friendly match.

'I am very sad this led to my first red card for Brazil, but what I did does not deserve so much attention. I'm sure it will not mean a long ban for me. When you look at the evidence, there is no reason for this.'

gee i saw the replay... he ran 10 feet right at the ref and bumped him... how was it an accident???

I didn't see the incident, but if he really assaulted the ref then he deserves a suspension. But how many games will he miss?? and has a player ever been banned for life after assaulting a ref on the pitch? just curious.
