PFA Nominees

BBC

Quote:
Premiership leaders Chelsea dominate the nominations for this season's Professional Footballers' Association Footballer of the Year Award.
Last year's winner John Terry is joined on the shortlist by Blues and England team-mates Frank Lampard and Joe Cole.

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney have also been nominated.

Arsenal's Thierry Henry is the only foreigner in the running for the honour which will be awarded on 23 April.

PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor is not surprised tpo see Chelsea skipper Terry, 25, in the runnning again.

"He has been the cornerstone, not just of the Chelsea defence, but the whole foundations on which their success over the last couple of years has been built," said Taylor.

"John is the one person you would want alongside you in the trenches because he is strong, dependable, reliable and fearless.

"If things are not going well he will come up front and get a goal for you at a corner or free-kick."

And Taylor is not surprised to see Rooney up for the honour 12 months after he was named PFA Young Player of the Year.

"Wayne is special and his development under Sir Alex Ferguson has been great to see," he added.

"For a young man he has got such strength and it is all allied to great skill and perception and he is starting to show a lot more maturity too, which I am really pleased about."

Rooney, still only 20, is also named in the Young Player of the Year category along with Old Trafford team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Manchester United duo face competition from Tottenham's Aaron Lennon, West Ham defender Anton Ferdinand, Charlton and England striker Darren Bent and Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

IMO it should be between Gerrard and Rooney.

But Terry or Henry will probably get it...

I think Terry should win it. He's been the most consistent of that lot by a mile.

Someone has put a poll in...

I went for Gerrard because I think Rooney will get Young Player...Unless he can win both.

It's between Rooney, Gerrard and Henry. How Lampard and Cole are in there is beyond me - They done the opposite of what Ronaldo's been doing for 3 years, and have had awful second halfs of the season compared to their first.

If Rooney doesn't win player, he's a dead cert for young player.

Who should get it and who will are two entirely different things. Joe Cole and Frank Lampard for example shouldn't even be nominated but one of them will proberbly win it. Lampard has been awful this season. 14 goals is the only reason he's been nominated. Even Chelsea fans will tell you he's been awful this season. When will people like Toure get nominated instead of Joe Cole.

That said the other 4 candidates are fair enough. Rooney and Henry are the outstanding candidates and Gerrard and Terry are there through merit but aren't on a par this season with Henry and Rooney.

If I had to call it I'd say Rooney will get it as Man Utd have done better in the Premiership. I know it shouldn't count and be about what the player has achieved but since Rooney is hardly an overated Frank Lampard of this world I could stomach him winning it. And if he does Cesc should win young player. Hogging both isn't on .

It will go to Lampard or Gerrard, the former doesnt even deserve to be there, and people saying Joe Cole doesnt deserve his place... BULLSH1T. He has been the best left mid in the epl this season, the national teams stand out player in the past few months, so shove your bias crap to one side. However, imho it has GOT to be Henry or Rooney theres no other real competition. Great how its only the "big 3" clubs that are mentioned, totally by passing some of the talents from tottenham, west ham, bolton etc etc

Lampard won't win it, he doesn't deserve to be there, his start to the season was good but he hasn't been anywhere near the form of last season,

I'm amazed at the short term memories it seems most people here have. Of those listed, the only one who has performed consistently throughout the season is Terry. All of the others have had serious dips in form. The only possible exception could be Gerrard but he, like Lampard, hasn't been in the same form as previous seasons. It was only a short while ago that Henry was being criticised for showing no commitment and looking like his mind was on a move in the summer.

Once again, this poll will turn into a "pick the player from your club" poll.

I wouldnt use the word "serious" mate. Rooney has had about 4 bad games this season, none of them together just scattered around, as can be expected when you playing 40 games a season. Henry HASNT been great all season, i'll grant you that and i remember when i first joined soccer24-7, in the Arsenal Forum there were seperate THREADS saying Henry should **** off to Sunny Spain because of his lack of commitment etc. But the one thing Henry does bring to the game, is an entertainment factor that the greatest coaches in the game cannot teach you, and every single game he does something amazing, like Rooney, and even if it does not carry on through the ful 90 minutes, some of the things they can do even when there on an off-day are fuc'king amazing.

And i still reckon JT is vastly overrated, great CB but nowhere near as good as everyone likes to make out. Shame he isnt playing in Serie A or La Liga because i doubt he would get away with half the handballs he does over here

Right i must ask.

Is this award January-January

or

Start of the season to end of the season

because if its January to January Lampard definatly deserves to be in it, and i'd maybe question Henry's inclusion due to injury and i fail to see how Ronaldo would make it.

I Always thought it was season to season.
Even if it was Jan-Jan, I wouldnt include Ronaldo tbh.

Poll wouldve been better "who should" not "who will"

should= Gerrard or Rooney
will= Terry

Lamps- has he been playing the past few weeks? Not literally of course.
Henry- he has missed a fair amount, but it speaks volumes that hes top of the goal table still.
Cole- I think hes a fair shout, hes had a really good season IMO.
