Sources: Old Big East has new name

By Brett McMurphy | ESPN

The American Athletic Conference is the new name for the former Big East Conference, according to sources.

The league is expected to formally announce the new name as early as Thursday.

In the Big East's final season in its current makeup, the league is going out with a flourish. Louisville upset Florida in the AT&T Sugar Bowl, and five teams reached the men's and women's Final Fours, the most from one conference in NCAA history.

Last month, sources told ESPN that commissioner Mike Aresco favored America 12 Conference as the league's new name. However, the schools' presidents rejected it because they didn't want a number included.

NBC and Notre Dame said the extension would begin in 2016 and run through the 2025 season. Terms were not disclosed, though the current five-year contract is reportedly worth an average of $15 million annually.

ACC and Notre Dame Announce Five-Game Football Schedules for 2014-2016

First Three Years of Notre Dame's ACC Football Opponents Set

GREENSBORO, NC — The Atlantic Coast Conference and the University of Notre Dame today announced the ACC opponents the Fighting Irish will play in the first three seasons of their football partnership with the league that begins with the 2014 season.

As part of the agreement to join the Atlantic Coast Conference, Notre Dame will play five ACC teams each year, alternating between three home games and two away and two home games and three away each year. Notre Dame will face every ACC team at least once in the first three-year rotation of games.

“The football partnership between the ACC and Notre Dame will not only enhance our league’s already ambitious football schedules but also will provide terrific fan excitement,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. “One of the benefits, moving forward, is that almost all of our student-athletes will have an opportunity to play against Notre Dame during their ACC careers which is extremely special.”

2014
Notre Dame will play host to Louisville, North Carolina and Wake Forest. The Irish will have road games against Florida State and Syracuse.

2015
Clemson, Pittsburgh and Virginia will play host to the Irish with Notre Dame hosting Boston College and Georgia Tech.

2016
the Irish will play host to Duke, Miami and Virginia Tech and will have road contests with NC State and Syracuse.

The NCAA Division One Board noted that the current Big East Conference would become the American Athletic Conference ("The American") on July 1, 2013, clearing the way for the new conference to adopt the Big East name. The American will retain the Big East's permanent seat on the Division I Board of Directors and their three votes.

http://www.vuhoops.com/big-east/2013...s-a-conference

The only conferences with permanent seats and 3 votes on the NCAA D1 Board are the 11 FBS conferences. The other 7 seats rotate.

In any given year, 4 will go to FCS conferences, and the other 3 to D1 leagues that do not sponsor football. Those 7 leagues have 1.14 votes each.

Hawai'i football changing name back to Rainbow Warriors

According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Hawaii athletic director Ben Jay has reversed field from a previous decision and all men’s athletic teams will be renamed the Rainbow Warriors. This decision comes just months after Jay decided all men’s sports would simply be named the Warriors. From 2000 to 2012, some teams were named the Warriors and others the Rainbow Warriors. This occurred after former UH football coach June Jones requested the football team be known strictly as the Warriors. Prior to 2000, the football team was known as the Rainbow Warriors.
