It's certainly an odd turn of events. as ive always said picking managers is hit and miss. Newcastle were furious with pardew, liverpool raved about kenny. so let's get behind him and hope for the best. i think the owners have mismanaged the situation and had their hand forced to make a safe appointment. they were rash in sacking sc without a replacement and bigged it up with the iconic promise. i don't think sod was on the radar until they scared off the big names with Dodgy trialists. it could all be a happy accident though?

Don't get why this is uninspiring, or embarrassing. We're a lower table Championship club with very few players.
If it wasn't for the owners and the stupid "iconic" tag and the ridiculous sacking of Cotterill (both marketing ploys to get fans on-side!?) then this would be viewed as a good move for a struggling Championship side, especially if Coppell joins too.
I'm pleased with the glowing nature that O'Driscoll views Forest with - he clearly knows the capabilities of the few players that remain, he is the guy in the best position to immediately know where we have to improve the side (aside from the obvious 4/5 defensive places) so there is no transitional periodthat we have no tiem for, for him to fully assess the squad... and is in there with the likes of Guedioura.
Hopefully we can arrange a couple more pre-season games now (we only have two offcially still on don't we?) get signing a few players as soon as possible (I'm hoping our scouting teams and Cotterill's wish list has already got a few players waiting to sign - and O'Driscoll joining will trigger the anniouncement process - especially as he will probably have had a word in Cotterill's ear about targets)
He sounds like he wants to play nice football and seeing as in his very first season it will eb a team of his sculpting (if time allows) then we will hopefully even have soemthing to watch with a smile, even if we are perhaps in for another season of struggle.
Just hope people get some realism and see this appointment for what it is - A decent & steady Championship appointment - this makes perfect sense, post-Cotterill...

Good for Forest.
I think he's an excellent manager and I think he'll do a far better job than some of the so-called big names being touted.

I will definately support O'driscoll and the team and take on board the transition message and him knowing the squad. All useful things he will bring. I also appreciate he added a lot to us last season and is a good coach. I think my initial uncertainty and a feeling of being underwhelmed is largely down to not knowing the owners and how much money they have to spend. Are we going to be a Rolls Royce or a Ford Focus? It seems it might be a Ford Focus, reliable and steady. I would be happy with that but terms like "iconic manager" and sacking a manager when you first arrive creates an unrealistic air of expectancy. We shall see as we might end up being a Trbandt!

Hit the nail on the head.
If it wasn't for the hype this would be a solid appointment, but because of a few misguided buzzwords from the new owners have given haters the chance to call this an embarrassment.
If as you say the owners turn out to be the "Ford Focus" then I'm very happy with that too.

Article on Sky quoting Andy Reid:
http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11727/7920082
Quote:
"Everybody's happy. We spoke about it yesterday when we heard his name being mentioned and everybody was really happy about it," the Irish midfielder told Sky Sports News HD.
"I don't think it's a case, as is being made out, that it's the players that have made the appointment. It's not like that, but we are really happy.
"Sean really impressed us all last season when he came in. When his name was mentioned and we were asked, we gave our opinion and the overriding opinion was that we would like him to be our manager."
|
I think its pretty good that they seeked the opinion of the players, also he can hit the road running now ready to get teh signings in.

being real fan is about supporting through the bad times. unless you support united or city there will be more down days. it is easy to predict failure at every appointment because you'll be right most of the time. problem is that everyone else wants to hope for better, for a 7-3, or a double over Derby. until a manager fvcks up at least let everyone support him

Well you're wrong here for a start!
Remember when anyone who knew anything about Doncaster Rovers were wondering how a tiny, barely football league sized club were not only holding their own at this level, but were doing it by playing stylish, passing football - that was O'Driscoll. He not only got them into this league, but kept them performing and entertaining, well above their level (and I mean literally leagues above their level) on a miniscule budget. What he achieved at Donny was very very impressive.
To say he's achieved nothing at this level is very negative, but worse it's just not accurate. I don't know if he's the right man for us, but the players - you know, those professionals in a position to know - seem to think he is, and that's good enough for me.
I'm very happy with this appointment. We're not above him just because we've got a bit of money all of a sudden - anyone who has actually sat through some of the durge football we've had to should be happy we're bringing in his style of manager! I'd suspect alot of the people moaning about him don't (or didn't) go anyway and wouldn't be seen dead going to an actual football match unless their team were spending buckets of cash and were employing fancy players and managers.
I'm fed up already with all the armchair fans who don't know the guy poo pooing him. Not neesarily you Michael - for all I know, you go every week and just have a memory damaged through watching Nickey Eaden et al. But everyone I've spoken to, who support Forest without actually going to games, have been complaining.

I remember watching Sheff U v Donny on BBC and Billy Sharpe scored for Donny, they were playing some very fancy stuff then.
Let's see what he can do with a budget then

You mean like when you spent a couple of years slagging Cohen off, even claiming him below par for League One.
Awful £250k signing that lad was...
