Barca - Badalona (Copa Del Rey)

from goal:

Copa Del Rey: FC Barcelona - Badalona

Frank Rijkaard is promising to take the second leg of Barça's cup tie with neighbours Badalona seriously despite leaving seven first-team regulars out of the squad.

The Dutch coach believes that the game is another chance for his team to boost their confidence as they look to recapture the form that swept them to two trophies last term.

In the first leg, two weeks ago, a faltering display saw the Blaugrana only manage to overcome their Segunda B opponents 2-1 on the artificial pitch in Badalona.

Two goals from Eidur Gudjohnson meant that Barça will have few fears of actually being eliminated from the competition at this early stage, but Rijkaard is still keen for his team to impress.

With confident all-important at Camp Nou, the Barça boss has been impressed with his players' attitude and believes that the team will only become stronger as a result.

"I have spoken with the squad and I am satisfied with their mentality," he told a press conference on Tuesday.

"I am happy with the attitude. After the game against Chelsea, where they gave everything, we went to play Depor who were very strong and I was impressed with the way the players approached it.

"If the team continues like that then we can only grow and do more good things."

For the visit of Badalona, Rijkaard has once again looked to the B team as he has named four youngsters in his squad.

Highly-rated forward Jeffren Suárez, who was an unused substitute in the opening match, has been joined by defender Marc Valiente and midfielders Marc Crosas and Víctor Vázquez.

While the quartet lok to gain experience, several of Rijkaard's regular players will be absent as Deco, Ronaldinho, Carles Puyol, Leo Messi, Gianluca Zambrotta, Edmílson and Rafa Márquez have all been left out.

The seven players will, instead, undergo an intense training regime to ensure that their fitness levels do not drop.

Puyol has also not been included after the death of his father at the weekend, but the team captain has returned to training.

"Given the circumstances, he wants to work but personally it is not easy and he needs time," Rijkaard said,

"He is training with the squad like normal and he wants to do that and has said he prefers to be with his team-mates."

Barça have not enjoyed much luck in the Copa del Rey in the last few seasons and under Rijkaard it has definitely taken a backseat as the club have challenged in the league and Europe.

Last term Catalan third tier outfit Gramenet embarrassed the Blaugrana by knocking them out in extra time when the early rounds were still played over one leg.

It is nine seasons since Barcelona last won the competition when they lifted the Copa del Rey in 1998 to complete the league and cup double for the first time since the mid-1950's.

With the home side already having an advantage, the game will no doubt fail to inspire all but the hardiest of Barça fans as the cup is an event that only begins to draw real interest around Spain in the latter stages.

it's time we got our hands on the cup as well.

i know we've been crashing out very early lately, but i have a feeling this time we're taking it more seriously.

Gee, sure seems like it'd be a novel idea to actually use someone who can score like Saviola...Yet, you really believe FR et al are going to use him?
