Arrigo Sacchi looks ready to seal a shock return to football with Real Madrid next week.

The Italian has been tipped to arrive as a general manager or director of football at El Santiago Bernabeu as early as Tuesday.

Real are keen to add some top-level experience to their management structure with coach Mariano Garcia Remon in his first major job.

The club have refused to confirm that the former Italy coach will join in the near future, but president Florentino Perez is expected to announce Sacchi's signing at a board meeting next week.

"Sacchi? It is not the time to talk about that now," said director of sport Emilio Butragueno.

"I insist that this subject is secondary for now. There will be time to talk about it in the future."

Sacchi has been out of football since leaving his post as manager of Parma in the 2002-03 season due to health concerns.

Does this picture help you to remind who this guy is?

sacchi is old school, not a modern day manager.

I accept he was a great manager of milan and italy, but were his reasons for leaving parma not more to do with results on the park, with his health a convenient excuse?

IMO this is a step back for real, but unsure who else is out there

Real turn to Sacchi

Real Madrid have confirmed they are to appoint Arrigo Sacchi as director of football.

Coach Mariano Garcia Remon will remain as first-team coach, while Sacchi is to work under Emiliano Butragueno who will remain as overall director of sport.

Real president Florentino Perez hopes that Sacchi's experience will stabilise the club and aid their push for honours this term.

"We have decided to appoint Arrigo Sacchi so that he can bring his substantial experience to help make our club more professional," stated Perez.

"We did not want someone to coach the team but someone who can help organise and plan everything to do with football at the club and Arrigo Sacchi was the ideal candidate."

The Italian, who leaves a similar post at Parma to take on the role, will be handed an indefinite contract at El Santiago Bernabeu.

From Channel 4 Football Italia Last Updated 18 Dec 2004

Arrigo Sacchi is now officially the technical director at Real Madrid and reports suggest his first transfer target is Alberto Gilardino.

The Spanish giants have now confirmed that Sacchi, a former Coach at Milan and the Italy squad before becoming a director at Parma, has signed a contract to give them more structure.

“Sacchi is someone who knows football very well and will bring us all of his experience,” explained President Florentino Perez. Emilio Butragueno has been appointed Vice-President in the shake-up.

One of Sacchi’s main roles within the club will be to co-ordinate transfer policy with tactical direction and the Italian press maintains Gilardino will be his first major signing.

The Parma striker has shot to fame under Sacchi’s time at the Stadio Tardini and he was said to be close to Milan or Roma for next season.

However, Real Madrid must now be the favourites to capture the Italian international and Under-21 European Championship winner.

It’s claimed that Michael Owen will return to England in order to make way for Gilardino, while Roberto Carlos could also be shipped out under Sacchi’s new guidance.

“I want to achieve what I have at Parma over the last two and a half years,” he told the Gazzetta dello Sport. “It is a precise role that involves co-ordinating the players, tacticians and fitness Coaches. I will also follow the medical staff, because Real intend to build up that area. I’ll also be in charge of transfer policy.”

Real Madrid Deny Ancelotti Link
goal.com

With the arrival of Arrigo Sacchi, speculation was rife that the new Technical Director would bring over the Milan coach next summer as coach of the Spanish giants.
These rumours have been categorically denied by Real’s President, Florentino Perez, who does not even take into consideration this possibility for the time being.

“This possibility is not contemplated right now. They are just rumours which do not have any foundations. It will not happen.”

However, Perez was more open regarding a possible future move for Ancelotti.

“Never say never, but if you ask me now, the answer is no.”

Just totally contradicted everything he said with that statement. Still, Ancelotti will not leave Milan.

ancelotti wont leave....and i dont prefer him at madrid. id rather have scolari or a more far fetched dream mourinho. mayb hitzfield but scolari #1 option i should think.

Quaresma07 Dec 22 2004 07:43 PM

Sacchi era is going be very interesting.

mejulian Dec 23 2004 06:44 PM

I think this is going to bring an authority problem in Madrid. A man with the curriculum of Sacchi will probably get involved in technical decisions in critical situations. Who will be the boss?
