We are all intitiled to our own opinions,But how the Hell can you pick Effenberg :censored and :censored Moller over ,WOLFGANG OVERATH is incrediable :nono. He of the" Velvet left foot",is of the Greatest Midfielders ever! :bowing

I started watching football at the age of 4 beginning of Euro 1980, but I collected many videos over the years of the great 70's German team.

However, I did not see any clips of older generations.

Did anybody see Toni Turek as a goalie ? How does he fair when compared to Meier (the best in i.m.o) ?

What about Helmut Rahn ?

And by the way, Overath is indeed better than Moeller , Effenberg if compared on a one to one basis. He was a very solid player.

What about Schuster ? I saw a brilliant player on the field, although stupid outside. His talent intimidated Platini, according to the French legend himself.

Did Schuster played for the national team?

I liked Harold Schumacher. :bowing

Schuster played in Euro 1980 as a 20-year youngster and displayed his outstanding talent and was instrumental in the 3/2 win against Holland in the group stage and the 2/1 final win against Belgium. He was unbelievable in his talent and control. I dare say that the 80's would have had an equally prominent star like Platini and Maradona should Schuster have continued.

He played till 1983, missing out on WC 1982 because of a vicious foul by the butcher of Madrid. Then he made a stupid decision never to play for the National team in 1984. When Beckenbauer took over, he saw in him a destructive force for the chemistry of the team and did not make any effort to call him back. I think he might have been right, as Schuster was a spoiled kid with many problems.

As for Schuhmacher.....well...he was a great goalie but I can't get past the famous Battiston incident. He can turn the crowd against the team easily and he sometimes did not live up to the expectations when it counted (Final WC 1986) .....

The 86 team was a very weak German team. It is true that Schumacher had a bad game but if it was not him, Germany would have never made the final. He had a great tournament and was the best keeper of his era. Michael Platini was said that he fears not goal keeper but that he somehow loses his way to the goal if Schumacher is the goalie.

I think U guys forgot to mention the great Netzer. How come?! He was the midfielder of his time and he was the main reason why Germany won their Euro-championship then.

Distant Voices Sep 9 2004 05:04 PM

Maier
Kohler Beceknbauer Schnellinger
Breitner Matthaues Overath Bremhe
Muller Rumeniggee Fischer

Gerry_BMG Sep 9 2004 09:43 PM

And I am surprised that no one else choose Fritz Walter. Makes me contemplative.

Distant Voices Sep 9 2004 09:52 PM

I recently met a old pro who played for Kassel against Walter in 1957! He marked him too and said Walter was on the way down then.

Walter is a legend and kicker in 2000 voted him the best player ever but for me- he was- from what I hear- brilliant in the 1954 WM but at other times in his career he was not.He also seemed to be a very anxious guy lacking in the arrogance/belief of someone like Matthaeus.
I personally would put Max Morlock and Rahn ahead of him in the 1954 team.
He also lost alot of playing time due to the war.

Other posters-well no one was born in 1954!

Gerry_BMG Sep 9 2004 09:55 PM

In 1957 Walter was 37!!! What do you expect? Superman?

A player who was adored by Beckenbauer for his skills, even saying that Walter was the best ever.

Rahn and Morlock???? Hell!!!! Putting Klaus Fischer ahead of Walter is bad enough

Distant Voices Sep 9 2004 10:03 PM

Fischer had a good goalscoring record-one of the best.

Okay okay I'll change it...
