I just think they are rather similar players, both have leadership and can be put in several positions in the midfield.
The problem of Frings may be his fluctuation in form. This year he is better in Werder Bremen. Him, Deisler and Klose are 3 NT players that improved a lot this season

Yes sounds like a good idea. However will that be 4 in midfield or 3. Maybe you should define further which Effenberg role. Vogts had him at RB in 1994, however I like his role at Bayern when he won the champions league.
I think Frings would be best for the NT where we have 3 in the back, like how we had Ramelov, Metzelder and Linke in the last wc.
Then Frings can be in the middle with Ballack and Pig as the attacking midfielders.

Whilst he is a good player, Frings is definitely NOT a leader like it is suggested here, I have always considered him a weak personality. The only person who fits the role of defensive midfielder with leadership skills is Kehl, but there's another thread on that.

Frings in Ballack in central midfield is similar to Englands problem with Gerrard and Lampard. THey are similar type players....Germany needs a holding player to help the defense. I agree Kehl is the player for this. Otherwize hopefully Hamann can do it.

Afterall, do we need someone like Trochowski in the squad? or someone like Scholl?

If Frings was a strong player-he'd still be at Bayern
