Former German international Jens Nowotny has been told by Bayer Leverkusen to look for a new club.

The veteran defender has not started a match this season and, after launching a legal battle with his own bosses, has been given his marching orders.

The player lost a recent case with the club over an alleged verbal promise that he would receive his full salary during a lengthy injury spell, but has now decided to return to court over differences with the club over the taxation of cash he received for a contract extension in 2002.

"It is simply no longer possible for us to continue working with Jens after he decided to go back to court despite a recent guarantee that he would retract his claims against the club," chief executive Wolfgang Holzhauser said.

Nowotny, who is contracted at the Bay Arena until 2008, has been told that he will not play for the club again and that he should begin looking to resume his career elsewhere.

"The whole situation is really regrettable and unpleasant for all parties. But we have now reached a point where no other course of action is possible," commented sport director and current caretaker coach Rudi Voller.

So who do you think will pick him up? I tell u if Nowotny had no knee legiment injuries he could be in the top list of defenders with the likes of Nesta, Stam, Maldini, Payol etc etc
I wish Mainz would sign him.

Leverkusen are well out of order here.

Nowotny has played there for 9 years and has damaged his cruciate ligaments FOUR times playing for the club. The law says that after 6 weeks sickness the health insurance picks up the wages, but this was an injury that is part and parcel of football, and he did it giving 100% for the club.

Nowotny was (is) an excellent servant of Bayer Leverkusen and didn't deserve this treatment. I hope players boycott this club as a matter of principle. What should their current players think, I won't tackle, because if I get injured the club will only pay my wages for 6 weeks.

Leverkusen are making a big mistake.

Nowotny should move to Bayern..the welfare club

Didn't this also occur with Sammer in Dortmund back in the 90's or am I mistaken?

Don't think so, Sammer ended up managing BVB after getting his career ending injury.

LEVERKUSEN, Germany (AP) - Jens Nowotny's agent pleaded Thursday for Bayer Leverkusen to take his client back a day after the German club said the defender would never play for it again.

Leverkusen said it would continue to honor Nowotny's contract until 2008 - but he would not play for the club, which is angry because the former German international brought two court cases against it.

"He absolutely wants to play and help the team," Georg Bischoff, Nowotny's agent, said. "A guy like Jens Nowotny is attached to Bayer Leverkusen, it's like a second home to him and he wants to give them 100 percent."

The 31-year-old Nowotny is trying to come back from his fourth knee operation. He has played for Leverkusen since 1996 and once was regarded as Germany's top defender.

Nowotny can continue to train with the club and receive medical help. He has not said when he can play again following his February operation.

Nowotny had said in court that former Leverkusen coach Reiner Calmund had verbally agreed to pay him for six months - instead of six weeks as legally required - as he recovered from his latest knee surgery.

However, the judge ruled against Nowotny two weeks ago.

Nowotny and Leverkusen go to trial again on Oct. 28 in a tax dispute over a ?20 million (US$24 million) signing-on fee.
