WCQ: Arena selects youth against Ticos

Associated Press

MIAMI (AP) - The United States selected a lesser-experienced roster for the second straight game, announcing a squad for its World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica without Brian McBride, Kasey Keller and Landon Donovan, who will end a streak of playing in 20 consecutive qualifiers.

U.S. coach Bruce Arena, who used an experimental side in September's 0-0 draw against Guatemala after clinching its place for Germany with a 2-0 victory over Mexico, chose 11 players with 12 caps or less for the 18-man roster for Saturday's game in San Jose.

Four of the players come from the Major League Soccer-leading San Jose Earthquakes: defenders Wade Barrett and Dan Califf, midfielder Ricardo Clark and forward Brian Ching.

Manchester United goalkeeper Tim Howard returns to the U.S. side for the first time in more than a year, leading a cast of seven European-based players that also includes midfielders DaMarcus Beasley (PSV Eindhoven) and Bobby Convey (Reading); and defenders Eddie Lewis (Leeds), Oguchi Onyewu (Standard Liege), Carlos Bocanegra (Fulham) and Jonathan Spector (Charlton Athletic).

Real Salt Lake defender Eddie Pope returns to the team after missing the previous four games mostly due to injuries and is the most experienced on the roster with 72 caps.

Ching, who also has been injured, could play his first game with the national team since March, and will among a relatively inexperienced front corps that also includes D.C. United Santino Quaranta and New England Revolution forward Taylor Twellman.

"Obviously our main goal has been accomplished," Arena said Monday. "However, the last two games in this round are extremely important, not only from a competitive aspect, but also in evaluating players."

Donovan, who has 73 caps since making his debut in 2000, has played every qualifier since a 1-0 loss to Mexico in July 2001, and also played all five games during the 2002 World Cup.

Of 17 games played by the United States this year, the Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder has competed in 15, the most of anybody, missing only friendlies against Colombia and Honduras in March.

Definitely a younger squad, so it'll be interesting to see if these guys can get it done.

There's a lot of talent on the team so even though its a young one, I don't think it'll really hurt us. It'll be a good atmosphere to see them in because Costa Rica absolutely needs a win or tie to stay alive in the hunt for the third slot in qualifying. I think Ching and Twellman will start...with the fourth forward spot up for grabs between the two. One needs to distinguish himself in the next two games to be considered for that last spot alongside McBride, Johnson, and Donovan (assuming all are healthy this summer). Though Twellman is one of my favorites, Ching is a solid forward and I wouldn't mind seeing him there. Its a toss-up between the two. Ching is a taller, holding-type forward and could potentially be our next Brian McBride, but Twellman is a natural finisher and uses an excellent workrate to always be in position to score. I guess right now I'd give the edge to Twellman, who's been solid and steady all year long, whereas Ching is just coming off an injury. Both McBride and Johnson are fairly tall, whereas Donovan relies on his speed. Twellman could bring a different look to defenses, whereas putting in Ching is really no different from having McBride in there. lol, that may be my bias speaking, but I wouldn't mind either way if Ching was selected.

Our MF is definately a little raw outside of Convey and Beasley: Mastroeni has been capped before and done decently, but Martino has consistently failed to impress me. I thought this was the season he'd step it up and look to be a better long-term prospect, but he's still struggled. Clark has been good all year long for the Quakes, so its good seeing him get his chance. I have a feeling Quaranta might be subbed in as an outside mid, similar to how he played against Guatemala. Defense will be the anchor of the team, with more experience needed for Oneywu, though with his steady performances, he's looking better by the match. I want to see Wade Barrett partner him in the center, bc IMO Pope is getting too old and his lack of pace nowadays will be a liability against a quick "ticos" team. Albright and Lewis as the outside defenders, with Spector hopefully coming in as a sub late in the game.

Sometimes that's even better. Young players want to show they've got what it takes to make it to the first team, specially now that the world cup is coming.

We didn't look that great in our last game, but this seems to be a stronger squad so it'll be interesting to see how it goes.

Who is pumped for this? (minus the fact there is a 1 hour delay on ESPN2).

I can't wait for this game, I love US soccer.

sorry, just found out the score. I lost patience when ESPN pre-empted this game for a college football game.

Yeah, once again nobody breaking down the door to the starting 11.
Howard isn't looking his best. Arena shouldn't have picked the same game to give him some time and also play around with 3 at the back.

Pretty friggin pissed about that myself.

Wow. What a ******* embarassment. I can not tell you how pissed I am now after watching, probably the worst game I've seen as a US supporter.

We played a formation we weren't used to, players that aren't really up to it against a team AT HOME who we are 0-5-1 against historically who need to win to qualify for the World Cup.

What the **** did I expect. Twellman and Ching were ineffective, but then again they really didn't get any service.

Wanchope is a dick, and I'm glad the ref actually booked him for being an ass and stalling, along with the goalkeeper.

Unbelievable. If we lose to Panama I'm not going to be happy with Bruce "too much tinkering" Arena.

There is a difference between "putting in new players" and pissing a game down the toliet, and that's what we did tonight.

All credit to Costa Rica, they ripped our crappy team apart.

I think the atmosphere had a role in it too, even stronger than Mexico's Azteca Stadium with the fans in CR being so close to the pitch.

I think it was more the US team didn't come out to play, and we didn't play people who could win the game.

I understand Bruce's strategy, but he also needs to try to not embarass our national team.

Well I doubt many if ANY teams would do well with an young untested squad in there against a team who needs a win for qualification.

It was preventable, but Bruce decided to give the game up what a joke. :censored
