From a Liverpool website
Other good performers on the night I thought were Djimi Traore who kept both Duff and Robben very quiet, and Hamann who aided Alonso in the midfield sweeper role. Hamann always without fail plays well in the big games and that is a massive quality to have in that kind of position on the pitch. I’m very glad we extended his contract because while he may not be suited to every game, he has a big part to play this season. The defence was its usual solid self apart from the one occasion mentioned earlier, but you’ve come to expect that these days, thankfully
Alot of media gave him man of the match agaisnt Chelsea-months after his brilliant performance in Istanbul. Not many German players can say that.
Okay he was **** in Holland but interestingly-Klinsmann said Hamann needed to find his momentum and play games.
He is the best German defensive midfield around.
Frings, Ernst, Borowski-not good enough.

Tim Borowski and Sebastian Kehl are better than the old Hamann.. we need new blood in the national team.. Hamann is old and slow.. He plays football without running.. just standing in the midfield and playing passes.. that's all what he does !!

I agree that Hamann is the best defensive midfielder available to Klinsmann.
His positional play and ability to read the game is light years ahead of Frings, Borowski, Kehl, Ernst etc. He is also puts in some very good and agressive tackles.
I don't care if he passes the ball square or back many times, his role for the NT is to stabalise the team defensively so Ballack, Pig, Podolski etc can create offensive options.

Hamann is good i certain games. When you face good opponents. Thats why I wouldnt mind to take him to the WC if others are not better. But just for the bench. You cant use him when you play teams that will mainly defend against us and will do counterattacks

Those days are gone. That used to happen when teams feared the German NT team. That respect and fear has been gone for years.

Germany shouldn't play the same way Liverpool plays. The diamond shaped Midfield variation of the 4-4-2 formation (4-1-2-1-2) doesn't suit our present attacking strategy. Klinsmann plays with wide wings now and he doesn't need no DM. So Hamann won't suit right now.
I say two good midfielders.. Ballack besides Frings/Borowski would cover both the defesive & offensive roles. We can't just lose one player for performing defensive missions. That's old fashioned football. Same applies with the Libero that doesn't exist anymore.

While I agree with you, no one formation is superior, be it sweeper system, diamond midfield etc. Klinsmann has to find the system that suits the existing crop of players. A system that will make them perform to the best of their potential.
Maybe we cannot play with a sweeper now because nobody is fit to play that role now, so it must come back to some form of 4-4-2 as opposed to the normal German 5-3-2 system.

Hamann will be useful as a substitute. But I prefer Borowski or even Kehl over him... he's just getting old and slow...

Yeah Borowski and Kehl are in decent form currently. I hope that Kehl is a consistent mofo now. He could strengthen us

Hamann has asked Klinsmann not to call him this year anymore.
He wants to focus on Liverpool at the moment, but is still available for a recall when the World Cup starts.

I think, in contrary to Wörns, he makes himself look better by saying he dont want to be called up. That leaves a better light on him than Wörns and his complaints.

He quit just the way Ramelow did. I see no problem in that. Hamann has been a member ever since 1994. Time to go now and be replaced by someone fresh.
