The Black Cats see the 6' 6" target man as the perfect foil for Stephen Elliott in what would be a recreation of the little and large partnership of Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips from a few years ago.
But enquiries are still at the very early stage for the Borussia Dortmund forward and the 32-year-old's future remains uncertain.
The potential move has now been mentioned on the offical Borussia Dortmund website, which confirmed: "Koller has been the subject of interest from Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion, both of which have made contact with Borussia Dortmund.
"A deal is possible and it is believed that Koller would prefer the move to Sunderland because he would be more likely to get regular appearances."
Koller has an excellent pedigree and, ironically, Peter Reid tried to sign the forward for Sunderland as a replacement for Quinn in 2002.
That move fell through when the striker expressed a preference for German football but ironically it could be resurrected over the next few days with Koller finally ready to forsake the Bundesliga for the Premiership.
Koller as been at Borussia Dortmund for the last four years and has scored 54 goals for them. He is also a regular on the international scene where his 58 caps have yielded 28 goals.
But the big Czech's worth lies not just in the amount of goals he scores but what he contributes to the team overall.
He is in the Niall Quinn league when it comes to the role of target-man who can hold the ball up and bring team-mates into the game.
And he would also add a physical presence and height to a Sunderland squad which is desperately short on both, as it goes into a Premiership which has seen a gradual evolution towards taller and stronger players in recent years.
Koller, former front man for Lokeren and Anderlect, is rumoured to finally fancy a crack at the Premiership and several sources in Germany say that the striker is ready to leave the German club.
Albion are aware of Koller's potential availability and are interested but already have a ready-made targetman in the shape of skipper Kevin Campbell.
At Sunderland, he would face no such challenge with 37-year-old Brian Deane having departed and Kevin Kyle still sidelined with a long-term hip injury.
