Schalke have renewed their interest in Chelsea defender Robert Huth and plan another offer to land the player.
The Royal-Blues failed to land the 21-year-old German international this summer as Huth was desperate to prove himself at Stamford Bridge, but with neither Mladen Krstajic nor Marcelo Bordon in top form, the UEFA Champions League hopefuls will turn to the transfer market again.
Six weeks into the 2005/06 campaign, Huth has failed to become a regular in Jose Mourinho’s first team and after being warned by Germany boss Jurgen Klinsmann that he will risk his international status if he should not play club football on a regular basis, Huth might be tempted to leave Chelsea in a desperate attempt to win a place in Germany’s World Cup squad.
“The question is whether we can convince him to come to the Bundesliga,” declared Schalke’s managing director Andreas Muller, who confirmed that Huth would be their first-choice candidate.
“We are looking for a young player with international experience, somebody who might not be the best footballer, but someone who is always willing to battle." Given that Huth is tied to Chelsea until 2008, a loan move during the winter transfer window might suit all parties involved.
