A fourth match official will be introduced for German first division games after the winter break in an attempt to reduce the number of controversial decisions.

The decision, following a heated debate over refereeing in the Bundesliga, was taken on Wednesday in Gelsenkirchen after a meeting between referees and officials from the German Football Association (DFB) and the German Football League (DFL).

The fourth official, who will assist the two linesmen, will be introduced when the German league resumes on January 25 after its traditional winter break starting on December 15.

Referees have been criticised for controversial decisions by several league clubs. There were 11 red cards in the last two Bundesliga weekend programmes.

"The fourth referee will be introduced as an experiment for the second part of the Bundesliga season," said DFB president Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder. "His role will be to assist his colleagues."

Other modifications to refereeing, such as the use of electronic equipment, were turned down at the meeting.

"We think that the fourth referee will be a great help," said FIFA referee Herbert Fandel. "He will be able to support the first assistant, whose duty is complicated by the theatrics going on on the bench."

The introduction of a fourth referee will cost an estimated 500,000 euros. It will be determined later whether the clubs will have to finance it entirely or if the DFB will contribute.

The decision, which was taken shortly before a friendly international between Germany and the Netherlands later on Wednesday in Gelsenkirchen, was welcomed by Germany head coach Rudi Voeller.

"It is good news for the linesmen, who have plenty to do and will now be able to concentrate better on their main job," Voeller said.

But what is his role??? A fourth official already exists in all leagues, but he does out of the field job, controlling the bench etc... What will this fourth official exactly do differently?

he will be a second set of eyes for the on-field official... not the guy who does time but an actual official who can make calls and turn down calls...

So he can influence/change the ref`s decision? He won`t be using tv evidence right?

no.. no machanical assistance.. but he will be off the field so he may get an unbiased or a more non-emotional view

How will he be able to see better than the ref or linesmen then?

unabstructed view from the sidelines.. did you even read the article mate??? its all explained in there

sometimes the official has his back turned to certain areas of the field, and has his view obstructed by players.. not saying the new official wont have that problem, but 2 views from different angles are alot better than 1

would have thought an italian fan would appreciate this, especially with all the diving in serie A???

His main job is to control the coaches/benches.
I think itīs a good idea because some coaches and subs behave like insanes

It only says that he`ll help the linesmen, it doesn`t really say what he will exactly do. He`ll be sitting there in the middle or running around like the linesmen??

Yeah, if this fourth official was behind the goal posts or unless he has a tv assistance, otherwise how can he see better from out of the pitch?

I see diving everywhere, but as I said before, if he`s not behind the goal posts he can`t possible have a better view than the ref.
