Markus Babbel has spoken of his joy after making his Premiership return against Sunderland last weekend.
Babbel played his first league game in over a year during the 0-0 draw with Howard Wilkinson's side, and even had a chance to return in spectacular style when he missed a gilt-edged chance to open the scoring after just six minutes of the game.
But the German star was just relieved to finally back after more than a year out of action, during which he spent many weeks in hospital recovering from the energey sapping Guillan-Barre syndrome.
Babbel told Liverpoolfc.tv: "The gaffer pulled me into the office the day before the Sunderland game and asked me if I was ready. I said I was and he said 'well you're my man for tomorrow's game then'.
"I have worked hard on my fitness and was pleased to play in the Worthington Cup earlier this month. But coming back to the Premiership was always my big dream and never once did I think it wouldn't happen for me.
"To play at Anfield again in the Premiership was a great feeling and I felt good throughout the 90 minutes. I felt strong and comfortable and that was a big boost for me.
"It was just a pity we couldn't win the game. We had all of the chances but just couldn't find the goal which would have won us the three points.
"I had a great chance very early in the game and when the ball went over the bar I thought to myself 'what a return that would have been for me.' After the match the boss said it was a good defensive clearance!
"I'm just glad to be back. I don't know if I will stay in the team now but, to be honest, that's not the important thing. The only thing that matters is the team playing well and winning points."
Well done to the guy for coming back from such a serious illness. Looked like he hadn't even been away the way he was raiding down the right all game.
