FRESH FIGO INTEREST
by Thomas Zeh - created on 24 Jun 2005
Stuttgart could be ready to challenge Newcastle's interest in Real Madrid's
unsettled winger Luis Figo, according to reports in the German press.
Stuttgarter Zeitung claim that freshly-installed VfB coach Giovanni Trapattoni
is eyeing a bid for the Portuguese star if he cannot prevent Alexander Hleb from joining Arsenal.
The Gunners appear on the verge of snapping up the talented Belarus
playmaker and the Italian tactician is keen to reinvest the transfer fee -believed to be in
the region of €18 million - in order to strengthen his depleted team.
Stuttgart have already lost German international duo Philipp Lahm (Bayern Munich) and Kevin Kuranyi
(Schalke) this summer and Trapattoni has made it clear that he will try to bring in established players in order to fill
the void as he aims to take the Swabians back into the UEFA Champions League.
Figo has recently celebrated his international comeback for Portugal -
leading his country to a 2-0 win over Slovakia - and is believed to be looking for a new club which offers him the chance
of regular first-team action as he is keen to end
his shining career at the World Cup in Germany next year.
The paper suggests that Stuttgart would be able to invest a modest transfer fee
given the cash injection from the Hleb transfer, but
could struggle to meet Figo's large wage demands.
I thought this was worth a new thread :D
It's really funny what newspaper write in the summer :D
Figo would be a great replacement for Hleb, but I don't think it'll happen...just too unrealistic :USA_Blue
