How come big cities with one football team are at a disadvantage?

I mean...Look at London, Manchester, Liverpool, Madrid, Barcelona, Moscow etc etc
Then look at Paris, St Petersburg, Naples, Berlin etc...

There ought to be a reason for this eh?

Perhaps it's because of their fan base. Not enough fans means not enough profit from home games. No transfer money means worse teams. (I think)

i dunno - maybe the media-pressure is one reason of that.
if a big city has just one big club all of the media is focused on that and this lead to rising pressure. then the pressure lead to some bad moves by the clubs officals because they can't wait for success - but this won't work even if you seem to have all the money in world. am i right mr. abramovich ?

Well there must be more pressure on teams like Man U, Real Madrid, Arsenal etc who are not the only team in their city to do well to win trophies all the time. That pressure got to real and United last season and they didn't win a thing.

well ManU, Arsenal and especially Real Madrid have always big pressure because they are within the top-clubs of europe/world. the other clubs from the big cities we're talking about just have to make this step to be within that group.
and manU was at least close before to win a trophy (was it fa cup?). can't see ur point that these clubs have more pressure - the media have to split throu all the clubs especially in london.

It might be that local rivalry is rather important, to mobilise the fans, the sponsors and the media...?

Excuse me but I think this thread is total bollocks.
Berlin has also a couple of team... one was in the 2nd league...
Maybe the reason is because the likelyhood that a team with several teams in a big city is higher because the amout of teams is higher! But that is also bollocks

But being the only team in say Paris ought to give the team a huge fanbase, there is no competition for sponsors etc...

I think there is more to it, being without a local rival make clubs lazy...;)
