FSV Mainz 05 have been awarded a place in next season's UEFA Cup following the UEFA Fair Play draw, which was held in Manchester today.
Viking rewarded
The 2004/05 UEFA Fair Play competition ranked the Norwegian Football Association top, paving the way for Viking FK to win an automatic UEFA Cup berth. But six other associations - Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Germany, England and Switzerland - all finished with a coefficient equal or higher than 8.0 to earn a place in today's draw for two further places.
Half-time draw
The draw was conducted by Sir Trevor Brooking, director of football development at the Football Association of England, and UEFA official Pat Quigley, during the half-time interval at the UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2005™ match between England and Finland at the City of Manchester Stadium.
Lucky pair
The associations to emerge from the draw were the Danish Football Association and the German Football Association. The Danish Superleague does not finish until 19 June, by which time the team which benefits from their extra place will be clear, but the German Bundesliga's domestic Fair Play winners Mainz can already begin planning for a UEFA Cup campaign.
July start
Viking, the Danish representatives and Mainz, who finished eleventh in their first top-flight season since winning promotion from the 2. Bundesliga this time last year, will all join the UEFA Cup in the first qualifying round next month.

If I were to predict, the Danish representative would be Esbjerg.

FussballmafiaDFB!!!!!!!!!!!!
That was Hannovers place...
On what grounds did they give Mainz the spot? "Because of a more positive approach to the refs and the game"
If I was a H96 fan I would be out looking for bricks right now, because someone would get his window smashed....:censored

The rules for this fairplay aren't only the red and yellow cards - this is a fact. Also, it is not the dfb, who created this rules.

You think Uefa bother about the German rules when all countries have their own rules..?
It was DFB that selected a club, they chose to ignore H96 and put Mainz name forward...

Wow Schwally, spend some time in Hannover too? You seem to be really going to bat for them. :cool We used to have a Mainz fan posting on here regularly a few months back (wonder where he is? He'd back me up on this) he would tell you how great the fans are in Mainz which is one of the things they based this draw on. We were talking about the UEFA cup last year and it was Stuttgart and some Ital club in Italy. Next to no fans came to see the game and the Mainz fan was saying how that would never happen if his club was playing, well I guess he'll get to see that next year. Plus Maniz had an awesome run first half of the season, maybe they can bring that to the first few rounds of UEFA cup. Good luck to 'em. :clap

Oh, I´ll second that...Good luck to Mainz and all that
What gets me going is that the DFB just choose to disregard it´s own fairplay league and out of a whim name Mainz.
The Uefa just give guidelines in cases like this. the nominator is DFB...

DFB had to select the team, which was on 1st place of the UEFA-Fairplay Rules.

UEFA Fair Play rankings only take into account national associations that have played the required number of games. A cut-off point of 25 matches has been applied. The Fair Play coefficient is based on criteria such as positive play, respect for opponents and the referee, the behaviour of team officials and supporters as well as cautions and dismissals.
So how do we measure...
positive play..?
respect for opponents..?
The behaviour of team officials and supporters..?
Using this criteria the DFB could have chosen any team they fancied.
If a couple of Hannover fans had dressed up in Mainz colours and verbally abused the ref while lobbing beerbottles Mainz could have been bottom of the ranking....innit?
The DFBs own ranking show this list...
Platz Verein Gelbe Karten Gelbrote Karten Rote Karten Punkte
1 Hannover 96 39 0 1 44
2 DSC Arminia Bielefeld 48 0 0 48
3 1.FSV Mainz 05 48 1 1 56
4 Borussia Dortmund 61 1 1 69
5 Werder Bremen 54 2 2 70
6 Bayer 04 Leverkusen 62 0 2 72
7 SC Freiburg 60 2 2 76
8 FC Bayern München 60 1 3 78
8 VfL Wolfsburg 61 4 1 78
10 FC Schalke 04 69 3 1 83
11 VfL Bochum 69 2 2 85
12 Hertha BSC Berlin 65 2 3 86
13 1.FC Nürnberg 75 3 1 89
14 VfB Stuttgart 73 3 2 92
15 1.FC Kaiserslautern 78 0 3 93
15 Borussia M'gladbach 79 3 1 93
17 Hamburger SV 85 3 1 99
17 Hansa Rostock 83 2 2 99
Notice that the only team that never had a player sent off was never even considered for a fair-play award...

Ok Schwalker you seem to have this debate down to a science so I believe you, Hannover got screwed! Not only are the refs crooked but the whole DFB is corrupt! :cool

Naah, it´s just that I´m paranoid....:nono
The DFB is a body where responsible men sit down and make rules so that we all might benefit from their wisdom, no one have ever questioned the fairness of their decisions...:bowing
Well, maybe a few have but they where surely oiks and not really one of us or even able to offer their friends a decent brandy...;)

I bet you would Gerry...
It was in Holland I got this fatal addiction, forget about pot and drugs. What really gets you in Holland is coffee and brandy (with a choc biscuit of course..)
What can I offer you?..
I got a nice black Renault, smooth as velvet. Or maybe some Hennesy perhaps? To add that special "tang" while your eyes start to water.

Two goals from promising striker Benjamin Auer helped 1. FSV Mainz 05 to a comfortable victory at home to FC MIKA as the German side took a huge step towards the UEFA Cup second qualifying round on their debut in continental competition.
Ruman opener
The Armenian side were massive underdogs going into the game and after Petr Ruman gave the Bundesliga outfit the lead on eleven minutes, there was no way back. Auer then doubled the lead ten minutes before half-time, and following Nikolce Noveski's strike to make it 3-0 just prior the hour, the former Germany Under-21 striker rounded off a comprehensive win with his second of the evening.
Debut goal
But while Auer took the plaudits it was Antonio da Silva that inspired the win. The tireless Brazilian playmaker took the game to the visitors from the kick-off, his probing runs and searching balls immediately putting MIKA on the back foot. The visitors defended stoutly but soon found themselves behind when Czech striker Ruman opened his account for his new employers with an excellent long-range drive.
Hovhannisyan fumble
The goal sent a crowd of 22,000 inside local rivals Eintracht Frankfurt's stadium into raptures but while their defence was never troubled, MIKA goalkeeper Garnik Hovhannisyan was not overly tested either in the minutes that followed. Perhaps it was the lack of action that caught the custodian cold on 35 minutes as he fumbled Benjamin Weigelt's vicious long shot into the path of Auer, who slotted in.
Benji is da man! Don't ya think Gerry?

Mainz [1 - 0] Keflavik - Auer (the European force) in the 11th!

Goals from Benjamin Auer and Christof Babatz earned 1. FSV Mainz 05 a fine 2-0 win, although an outstanding display from Keflavík goalkeeper Ómar Jóhannsson prevented the German side effectively settling their UEFA Cup second qualifying round tie this evening.
Safe hands
The Bundesliga side dominated throughout and took an early lead when Auer struck on ten minutes. But Ómar Jóhannsson subsequently produced an exceptional performance to frustrate the hosts with countless brilliant saves until Michael Jóhannsson brought down Petr Ruman in the area 19 minutes from time and Babatz doubled the lead from the spot.
Auer strikes early
The home side immediately took charge of the match and their constant pressure was rewarded on ten minutes when Benjamin Weigelt sent in an excellent cross from the left and Auer notched his third goal of this season's competition with a powerful header. However, despite creating further chances Mainz failed to extend their advantage mainly because of Ómar Jóhannsson, who made one save after another, denying Auer, Fabian Gerber and Antonio da Silva in turn.
Wache save
With 22 minutes remaining the Icelandic visitors almost made the Bundesliga side pay for their failure to add to their advantage. Gudmundur Steinarsson's shot from 21 metres took a deflection off Nikolce Noveski, but Mainz goalkeeper Dimo Wache managed to push the ball on to the post before calmly gathering the rebound.
Babatz conversion
Only three minutes later the visitors left themselves with it all to do in the return leg on 25 August. Michael Jóhannsson brought Ruman down in the area, which earned the defender a booking and midfield player Babatz made no mistake from the penalty spot. The hosts had further chances, but Ómar Jóhannsson refused to give away another goal – but Mainz will none the less feel confident of progressing to the first round.

this dont belong in this thread but we will fight for relegation this year, once again. As long as we play with Heinz and Broich who currently are playing like **** (doubt that Heinz will ever get better in a tough league like the BL) as long we wont have a decent support for the strikers thus we will suck. I demand Polanski who wokrs like a horse but still has skills to provide the offense with decent passes.

mybe they can amaze them at home 1-0 or 2-1, they only have to play for a draw on away match...
just saw who is Domžale facing in Uefa cup. They played 2 years back in 2nd slovenian league(the 1st league is still very poor, while 2nd is realy realyy poor) will play Stuttgart..do they have a chance. Against israeli opponent they played on away match 2-2, at home they were lossing 0-1, when in the last seconds of the game, in 93th minute Domžale scored and progressed on away goals

Not this year, Aachen was the dark horse last year... and I must say they did quite well for a BL 2 team! The German teams this year are - Leverkusen, Mainz, Stuttgart, Hertha, and Hamburg.
