German club 1. FC Kaiserslautern's Mario Basler could be sanctioned for saying the referee in charge of their first division game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen deserved "a punch in the face".
Disciplinary inquiry
The German Football Association announced that it had launched a disciplinary inquiry after the former FC Bayern München and Germany midfield player blasted referee Uwe Kemmling's performance in Kaiserslautern's 1-0 defeat at Leverkusen on Saturday.
Punch in the face
"When we lose we get a bashing, and Kemmling really deserves a punch in the face today," Basler said during a popular sports programme on German television channel ZDF.
Basler protest
Basler was booked for protesting that Leverkusen striker Thomas Brdaric was offside when he scored the only goal of the game on 19 minutes, although the goal seemed valid from television replays.
No internal punishment
The 33-year-old Basler was fined for insulting a referee last February and Kaiserslautern chairman Rene C Jäggi admitted he had overstepped the mark again: "Of course this was not the correct word choice." However, he added that Basler would not face any internal punishment.
Knavs injury
Meanwhile, Kaiserslautern will be without defender Alexander Knavs in their league match against VfL Bochum next Sunday. The 26-year-old Slovenian international damaged ankle ligaments during the 1-0 defeat by Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Saturday.
