Huth snubs Schalke offer
by Thomas Zeh - created on 2 Jun 2005
Chelsea defender Robert Huth has rejected an offer from Schalke to return to Germany.
The powerful centre half was wanted by the Bundesliga runners-up but he has shunned the approach as he is keen to stay at Stamford Bridge.
Huth had already turned down the chance to join Bayern Munich and has now given Schalke similarly short shrift.
The 20-year-old Germany international remains hopeful he can become a first-team regular in Jose Mourinho’s collection of stars.
Schalke were willing to test Chelsea’s resolve to keep Huth, and the stopper's desire to stay with the Premiership champions, but returned home empty-handed.
“We were in talks but the player doesn’t want to leave England and Chelsea don’t want to sell him,” said Schalke’s team manager Andreas Muller after admitting defeat in the race for the former Union Berlin youngster.
Schalke are desperate to search the market for a new central defender as they are keen to strengthen the squad for their upcoming UEFA Champions League campaign and, after failing to land prime target Huth, the Royal-Blues could now be ready to turn their attention to Celtic’s unsettled defender Bobo Balde.
The 29-year-old has recently revealed that he is able to leave Parkhead on a free transfer this summer and seems to have a free pick of clubs, with Bayern Munich and Werder Bremen also keen on his services.
