Second round of the UEFA Cup has been drawn in Switzerland: The tie
that jumps off the page is a 'Battle of Britain' clash between
Scottish Champions Celtic and Worthington Cup winners Blackburn
Rovers. A passionate encounter is guaranteed when Turkish giants
Fenerbahce take on their Greek counterparts Panathinaikos. The
German teams have to play these games: Ferencvarosi : VfB Stuttgart /
Nicosia : Hertha Berlin / Legia Warsaw : Schalke 04 /
Vitesse : Werder Bremen // first Leg: Thursday 31st October //
second Leg: Thursday 14th November
Hertha Berlin midfielder Andreas Neuendorf has been banned for four
Uefa Cup matches as the result of headbutting an opponent during the
German capital club's 1-0 win over Aberdeen earlier this month. Uefa's
disciplinary committee have also fined Hertha 10'000 Swiss francs for
unsporting loudspeaker announcements and the setting-off of Bengal
lights by their fans during that same match.
Bundesliga club Hansa Rostock will have to reckon without Jochen
Kientz for between 3-5 weeks due to a stubborn-to-heal Achilles injury.
Miroslav Klose had confirmed that he is not looking to leave
Kaiserslautern despite the club's dire financial situation. The
Lauterer need a cash injection and the sale of German World Cup star
Klose seems the most obvious choice. 1. FC Kaiserslautern had arranged
a 5000000 Euro loan to help alleviate their financial problems.
Lotto Rheinland-Pfalz GmbH, the regional lottery council for the
Rheinland, had provided the money in exchange for the transfer rights
of the highly rated German international striker Miroslav Klose.
Eintracht Frankfurt had expressed an interest in bringing Andreas
Möller to the club as sporting director. The Schalke midfielder has
affirmed his intention to retire at the end of the current campaign
and Frankfurt want the former German international to return to
Frankfurt and help the club move forward. Möller made his debut for
Eintracht back in 1986 and played two more seasons with the Hessen
outfit before joining Borussia Dortmund in the 1987/88 season.
Bulgaria goal hero Dimitar Berbatov will be out of action for a month
after injuring his ankle in their 2-0 Group 8 victory over Croatia.
The Bayer Leverkusen forward picked up the injury in the opening
exchanges but played on and set up Stilian Petrov for the first goal
before finding the net himself. The Bayern Munich defender revealed he
targeted 2004 as the date for his international retirement.
"I want to win the next European championships with France and after
that, I think it'll be time to call it a day", Bixente Lizarazu told
France Football.
Energie Cottbus have moved to trim their squad by releasing striker
Markus Feldhoff, formerly VfL player. The 28-year-old's time at
Cottbus was ruined by a knee injury suffered in January and he has
not reclaimed his place in the team since.
