In a federation like Germany with a multitude of current and former states, semi-independent cities etc heraldry have always been a hit with the footy fans.
The advantages are two...The flags and symbols indentify the region, and you can combine the club logo with a regional flag in many ways to show who and what you are.

For example, A HSV logo on a Bavarian flag would show everone that the owner are a HSV fan from Bavaria.

In Schalkes case we can look at the Gelsenkirchen shield...

As you can see there are four fields containing four symbols.

Upper left: A church(kirch) symbolising the origin of Gelsenkirchen.
Upper right: A tree symbolising Buer, the northern, more countrylike district.
Lower left: The weapon of the Horst family...The nobs of the area.
Lower right: The hammers, symbolising the mines and metalworks that really made Gelsenkirchen what it is today....(No comments please!)

So as you can see we really have several symbols available..The hardcore Ultras-Gelsenkirchen often use the hammers for example.
