The lawyer representing Russian magnate Suleiman Kerimov in takeover talks with AS Roma in February has spoken about why the deal collapsed.
Salvatore Trifiro told Il Romanista yesterday: "It was all true, there was no bluff. Kerimov wanted to invest in Roma, to make them one of the powers in football.
"The negotiations began at the end of January. For some days we were succeeding in secret, without the worry of the press.
"The talks did not collapse because of political interference - not at all. The problem was that there was too much debt."
The offer on the table from Kerimov was believed to be £250 million. "That's not far off," admitted Trifiro. "Then there was going to be more funds made available to strengthen the team. "But soon the dream of Kerimov was over."
