Hertha Berlin 4-1 Hamburg SV: FT Report
PA
BERLIN, February 26 (Bundesliga) - A first-half flurry of goals ensured 10-man Hertha Berlin leapfrogged Hamburg in the Bundesliga and strengthened their credentials for a Champions League place next season.
Hertha's 11-game unbeaten run came to a crashing end last weekend when they lost 1-0 to Stuttgart but their league charge got back on track with a comprehensive dismantling of Thomas Doll's disappointing outfit at the Olympiastadion.
The game was effectively put to bed after half an hour thanks to goals by Guiseppe Reina, Gilberto and Marcelinho.
Hamburg were given a glimmer of hope just after the hour mark when the hosts' in-form playmaker Yildiray Basturk was dismissed for deliberate handball in the area but they shot themselves in the foot when Sergej Barbarez missed the resulting penalty.
Barbarez did manage to get his name on the scoresheet in the 78th minute as Hamburg threatened to make a fight of it.
But Gilberto put an end to the visitors' ambitions of an unlikely comeback with his second four minutes later as Hertha climbed to fourth in the table.
Reina opened the scoring in the fourth minute when he bundled home after Marcelinho's free-kick had been parried out by Martin Pieckenhagen.
The striker could have added another on the quarter-hour mark but the advantage was doubled a minute later.
Marcelinho was once again the provider as he teed up Gilberto, who nutmegged keeper Pieckenhagen from 12 yards out.
Hamburg missed two opportunities to reduce the arrears as both Barbarez and Raphael Wicky wasted decent chances - and Hertha made them pay by adding a third after 30 minutes.
This time Marcelinho turned goalscorer when he tapped home the simplest of efforts after Basturk's shot had been clawed away.
After a slow start to the second period, Basturk, the Turkey schemer, was given his marching orders for deliberate handball in the penalty box but Barbarez thumped the spot-kick against the post.
The striker scored Hamburg's consolation from inside the six-yard box with 12 minutes to go but the three points were sealed for the home side when Gilberto slotted home after Stefan Beinlich failed to clear.
