Werder Bremen 4-0 VfL Bochum: FT Report
PA
BREMEN, February 26 (Bundesliga) - Werder Bremen put their awful midweek display in the Champions League behind them with a comprehensive victory over Bochum that proved they will not surrender their domestic title without a fight.
All the goals came in the second half as the Bundesliga champions made amends for the 3-0 home defeat by French side Lyon that looks to have ended their interest in the continental competition.
Defenders Valerien Ismael and Frank Baumann both scored in the first five minutes of the second period and further strikes from Nelson Haedo-Valdez and Johan Micoud emphasised the superiority of the northerners.
Werder started the match well and after two minutes Ludovic Magnin crossed towards Baumann who headed goalwards, but Christian Vander managed to push the ball over the bar.
After 10 minutes Fabian Ernst was played in by a clever backheel by Magnin but fired wide of the right-hand post.
Johan Micoud curled a free-kick wide after 14 minutes and then Vander was called into action again to save from Miroslav Klose.
Werder were making all the running and a Micoud shot was deflected behind by Raymond Kalla.
Valdez then hit the side netting but a minute before time, Vander made his best save yet when he saved a header from Petri Pasanen from a Micoud free-kick.
In the second half, Werder got the goals their first-half display had merited.
Ismael opened the floodgates when he headed home after a cross from Ernst.
Klose then fired just over after collecting a pass from Valdez but after 49 minutes it was 2-0.
Klose created the opening for Baumann who fired from the edge of the box and Vander's fingertips were unable to deny the defender his first goal of the season.
Valdez then notched the first goal after 53 minutes when he beat Aleksander Knavs and took the ball around Vander before scoring his sixth goal of the campaign.
Micoud completed the rout after 72 minutes when he scored after a fine solo run from substitute Aaron Hunt, who had beaten three players.
Still Bremen were not satisfied and Paul Stalteri next created an opening for Tim Borowski who volleyed against the bar.
With five minutes remaining Bochum finally created a chance as Tommy Bechmann fed Vratislav Lokvenc but the big Czech fired wide of Andreas Reinke's goal.
Bremen ended the day third - four points behind leaders Bayern while Bochum are mired in the relegation zone.
