Santos will take it. Too much team for Bolivar, which only has the height on its favor.

Christian Zermatten scored a hat-trick as the Bolivian side handed Brazilian champions Santos a 4-3 defeat at 3,600 metres above sea level in their opening Libertadores game on Wednesday.

Despite their defeat, Santos produced the highlight of their Group Two game when forward Robinho scored an outstanding individual goal in injury time.

Santos made a disastrous start in La Paz when they failed to clear a free kick in the second minute and Argentine Zermatten, who joined Bolivar from their arch-rivals The Strongest in the close season, tapped home.

Pele's former club survived a shaky spell and then equalised through Deivid in the 24th minute following a mistake by veteran defender Oscar Sanchez.

The second half began in almost identical fashion with Zermatten putting the Academy back ahead and Deivid again levelling, this time from an indirect free kick awarded inside the Bolivar area for dangerous play.

Santos, who at this stage appeared to be coping well with the high altitude, cold and rain, briefly took control and Basilio had a shot cleared off the line.

However, the visitors collapsed in the last five minutes as Zermatten scored from a rebound and Diego Cabrera added a fourth.

Santos snatched a spectacular consolation goal when Robinho intercepted a pass just inside the Bolivar half, burst between two defenders and slipped the ball past goalkeeper Mauro Machado.
