Asamoah stuns Rangnick
by Thomas Zeh - created on 14 Feb 2005

Schalke coach Ralf Rangnick admits he was surprised that injured Gerald Asamoah made himself available for Saturday's 3-0 win over Wolfsburg.
The Germany international was thought to be sidelined for up to three weeks after doctors claimed that he had pulled a thigh muscle in his country's midweek 2-2 draw with Argentina.

However, Asamoah lined-up for Schalke at the weekend and even netted the game's opener with a fine first-half header.

''I had never expected that Asamoah would be able to play,'' declared Rangnick.

Meanwhile, Asamoah has tried to explain the reasons behind his surprising return to fitness.

''I don't want to argue with our doctor, who claimed that I had pulled a muscle, but I felt well on Thursday and therefore I decided that I'd be able to start the game,'' he revealed.
