17 minutes into the game.

so far germany has majority of possession and seems to be playing a hybrid 4-4-2, and is playing a quick passing posession game..

Argentina seems to be playing a long-ball/counter attack system which is occaisionally making the german defenders scramble a bit.. (why is woerns playing again???)

Feb 9 2005, 09:12 PM
schneider blatently knocked down in the box in the 25th minute... but ref calls no penalty.

even the replay shows it was a running push from behind by argentine defender, and schneider was just setting up to volley it at goal

DUESSELDORF, Germany, Feb 9 (Reuters) - Hernan Crespo struck with a penalty and a spectacular late chip to earn Argentina a 2-2 draw with Germany in a friendly international on Wednesday.

The 2006 World Cup hosts took the lead in the 28th minute with a Torsten Frings penalty before Crespo levelled with a second spot-kick five minutes before the break.

Germany went back in front through a Kevin Kuranyi goal on the stroke of halftime and were on course for their first victory over top class opposition in over four years before Crespo struck again.

The AC Milan striker, recalled by Jose Pekerman, took the ball in from the left and beat Jens Lehmann with a perfectly flighted shot.

Germany, whose last win against one of the game's front-rank teams was against England in 2000, are automatically qualified for the World Cup and must make do with a diet of friendlies as preparation.

Juergen Klinsmann had urged his players to use the visit of Argentina to prove they could beat a side he described as the best in the world.

Despite the absence of captain Michael Ballack, they dominated for much of the game, with Frings the key figure in midfield in the absence of his Bayern Munich colleague.

Frings came close to a spectacular opening goal in the 12th minute when his volley whistled past the right-hand post, with Roberto Abbondanzieri well beaten.

Gerald Asamoah forced a good save at the near post a few minutes later before Kuranyi's fall in the area at a corner gave Frings the chance to score from the spot.

Pekerman, using the match as a warm-up for World Cup qualifiers away to Bolivia and at home to Colombia at the end of March, opted for Juan Roman Riquelme as his playmaker, with Javier Saviola joining Crespo up front.

The combination of Riquelme and Saviola, both Barcelona outcasts, led to the equaliser.

Saviola, racing on to Riquelme's weighted pass down the right, brought the ball back inside and crossed low for Juan Pablo Sorin, who was bundled over in the area.

Germany responded to Crespo's first equaliser by re-claiming the lead within five minutes, when Bastian Schweinsteiger slipped a pass into the area for Kuranyi to shoot under the keeper.

The second half featured less good football but there were still excellent chances for Germany, who should have gone ahead in the 70th minute when Per Metesacker shot straight at the goalkeeper after being set up by Frings.

Argentina were hardly going all out for an equaliser but it unexpectedly came via Crespo's brilliance.

Well Lehmann fuking up should not surprise anyone.

how did he screw up if i may ask?
no goalkeeper in the world could have gotten that lob from crespo.

germany played a very good game.frings was great, also mertesacker.

i was a bit dissapointed by argentina's performance overall.
hopefully they can improve when it comes down to a game that counts.

farina gave a ridiculous penalty after freier clearly played the ball before sorin could shoot.

Lehmann was way out of his box when crespo lobbed him. plus there was a defender with crespo, and as p far as hilderbrand getting his chance. i dont think that he deserves any call up with his poor form. he is prone to mistakes. O

Obviously nobody is entirely happy with this result, as we all wanted the win; what's worse, we came so close. However, we should keep things in perspective: six months ago, we were beaten by the Czech B-team 3-0. Now, we have drawn with one of the world's very top teams in an entertaining and positive fashion; surely we can see the improvement and keep our eyes on the road ahead?

Add to that the great performance of Frings, the maturation of Kuranyi/Schweinsteiger/et al., and the overall *youthfulness* of the team (look at those pictures from the match!), and I think there is a LOT to be happy about. On the other hand, I agree that Wörns is past it, and Lehmann doesn't have what it takes to start for Germany.

All in all, I'm quite pleased that Klinsmann seems (so far) to be the real deal as manager. It's very good to look forward to these games again with a sense of optimism.

I dont make many conclutions from a friendly, also I noticed it was much more important for Germany than it was for us. Argentina's main problem will be to find the ideal team since there are too many options.there are really few players who could feel they secured a spot in this team.
Riquelme could find a partner in Aimar or D'alessandro. I don't know what will happen if Ayala and Samuel recover their level soon,in the mid surely Mascherano will be the chosen. They will have to make room for Tevez too..etc..still time.

Even so, the guy is a big liability. Maybe he can still perform at league level but at this level, he will get burnt just like against the Czechs.

Experience is overated. I would prefer Babbel or even Linke if we are going to go that route.

I have to speak for Wörns at least once. This pickering on him is really annoying. So hes not the fastest and made some errors some time ago; hes still one of our best defenders (do you think that's good, you might ask me. Reply from me: well, could be better). Obivously Klinsmann, the lovely "Oldie-hater", how Parkinson-hit Sepp Maier called him, preferes him because hes better than e.g. everybodys darling on this site, Arne "We Love You" Friedrich as CB who sat on the bench wednesday.

He didn't get burnt yesterday....probably best player after Frings-all he lacks is some pace.Who doesn't ? Hyppia, Juan, Campbell..all lacking great pace
He was shown up by the Czech Baros who was probably the player of the tournament.Worns is an excellent man marker.

Linke ? Come on ! :handbags

Get Metzelder fit and back to his best

Kahn
Friedrich Metzelder Worns Lahm
Schneider Frings Ballack Schweinsteiger
Klose Kuranyi

A very good team-lots of experience there-with Rost, Deisler (remember him ?), Mertesacker, Pander, Asamoah, Podolski as reserve.
I am very happy with this.
I wish Klose played yesterday-he is the best forward at the moment.

He may not have gotten burnt yesterday but do you really want to wait til a game that matters for it to happen? Juan and Campbell are quite fast, especially for their size. As for Hyppia, he may not be that fast but more so than Woerns! I dont have anything personal against Woerns, I agree he is a very good man marker and quite good positionally but the is very very slow and old. I would take Huth, Mertesacker or Friedrich any day, they are young and faster.

Feb 10 2005, 11:53 PM
Hitz as a starter, was surprisingly not too bad indeed. I think he didn't play exactly as a LB, but a wing back like Ziege or Marco Bode.

I am glad that Klinsi has the guts to make such a desicion. But i am still curious about the reasons why Klose, Friedrich and Kahn got left out...

As Metzelder, Lauth and Deisler have more or less "recovered", we still have rooms to improve

Gerry-Do you think Klinsi will play Klose and Kuranyi together ??
He seems to want to play players who are very mobile, quick and fast like Asamoah, Owemeyala, Schweini, Podolski even Freier..
My team above I think still alot of places are available-Schneider will be under pressure to be at the top of his game and Hinkel is a Klinsi type player-he just needs to get his head fixed..
I think "stand around" style of players like Bobic, Jancker, Kirsten even Bierhoff would not play in his team.

Worns is the klinsman era has been very good so lets cut him some slack, i think the most positive thing these days seems that no matter who we have on the field our attitude and the will to win is there ,plus we are developing asustem of a pressing game and aggressive play ,so we can stop throwing names all over the place.

we need back up for lahm, schulz ,pander fighting it out
right back is still up for grabs
central defence we got worns, per, huth they got the nod now, friedrich ,metze has the chance to get in ,fahrenhorst, madlung long shots.
ballack, frings, schneider ,schweini are set maybe ernst too then theres deisler ,hitz,

upfront i belive klinsi will take 5 strikers kuranyi, klose, poldi asamoah and lauth will get the nod i hope ahead of neuville and brdaric.

Na Asamoah plays really well this season as a forward. I think is much better than last season when he was playing as a right midfielder. And he has already expressed that he prefers playing upfront.
