Terry Venables plans to make Darren Anderton and Nicky Barmby his first signings after a summit meeting with Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale in Bangkok tomorrow.
Leeds are prepared to pull out of the long-anticipated signing of Brett Emerton because Dutch club Feyenoord have raised their price to Ģ12million.
Negotiations for the 23-year-old Australian will continue in the week but Venables will tell Ridsdale that he wants to move for the two former England internationals. They were signed by Venables for Tottenham and he picked them to play for England when he was national coach.
Venables last night confirmed tomorrow's meeting with Rids-dale before leaving Australia for Thailand on the last stage of Leeds' pre-season tour.
'I have had a couple of weeks to analyse the situation and I will report my findings,' said Venables. 'We have been linked with all sorts of new signings; some close, others nowhere near. But the club must take this on now. It is up to us not only to decide what we want but also to make our moves as quickly as possible.'
Only a dramatic change of heart by Feyenoord over Emerton could change Venables's plans. The Dutch team had been expected to agree a Ģ7m fee for the midfielder but Leeds are not prepared to pay the Ģ12m now being demanded.
By contrast, Barmby and Anderton would not cost more than Ģ10m combined.
So these are the exciting world class players Ridsdale promised us and can look forward to seeing at Elland Rd next year. Any opinions out there??
