hmm. good thread maniac.. i could go on about this all day but i'll keep it small...(hehe)

i'll break it down by teams i guess

Bayern Munich- with the signings of diesler, ze roberto, and Ballack nothing really should be able to stop them from running away with the bundesliga title and the deutsch cup... how they fair in the champs league depends on the ability of these players to gel, and how the new attacking style works out for them (rumours are they have been using a very forward style in thier pre-season games)

Borrussia Dortmund- basically the same team from last year with a couple new young german up and comers. thier strength will be thier backfield and goaltending... they will probably finish 2nd or third in the league.. but wont be impressive in the champs league ( but give them 2-3 years and it may be a differant story)

Vfl Wolfsburg- Lots of young players mixed with seasoned veterans make this team exciting to watch and may surprise a few people, no major signings but got G christianson from glasglow on loan... besides thier ugly uniforms they are a treat to watch but lack the big names to get them past the mid-table status they have had for 4-5 years

Bayer leverkusen- with the loss of Ze Roberto and Ballack this team will suffer greatly, they still have a great team in midfield (schnieder) and forward (neuville) and a great keeper (jorg-butt) but without the two main finishers they lost they lack the scoring power of the previous year, they better hope bierofka is a genious. they will only be top 5 at best.

Schalke04- things are looking up for the aptly named " working man's team"rumour is they may sign Jardel, and almost every starting player is coming back, too bad they lack a good backfield and goaltender ( i love em' but i gotta be honest).. hard work and discipline may get you far in the world cup but in the bundesliga every team works hard and is disciplined.... i pray for an upset, but reality prevails, 2nd or 3rd

1860 munich- man this team is old and not getting much younger.. this team needs young players fast, dont get me wrong Martin Max does his job well but he aint exactly young anymore the loss of bierofka hurts as well.. but with young players trying for starting positions (D remo meyer and MFsandro cesscutti) they may be n the right track.. top half of the table

Kaiserslautern- with the signings of future german international Christian Timm (from fc Koln) and young striker selim teber, Kaiserslautern may be this years Bayer leverkusen.. they havent lost any key players, but have cut a lot of age, they seem to be gearing up for the future.. the only thing this team may lack is a leader, but i see a bright future for this squad if they could pick up another reliable defender.. they will be 4th in my opinion but have the potential for 2-3rd.. as for europe look for them to go far in the eufa cup

hertha berlin.. with the loss of diesler and daei, this team lacks creativity, but they seem to be trying to find "the next big player" in midfield, they have signed 2-3 young midfielders and called up one from thier youth team, my only problem with this theory is the fact that they play a defensive style.. if you want to train a crop of creative and offensive midfielders you have to give them room to play, otherwise why bother.. basically the same team i see them doing worse then last year 7-8th place in my books.

well these are the true "big teams of germany ( with the exception of a few relegated teams in re-building years, namely eintracht frankfurt and fc koln)... if i have left out a few of your favourite please feel free to write your own review or give me **** for leaving out your favourite team..

Munich is always up there and they are the big money team, but they lack commitment and effort, team spirit. Lizarazu is injured (again) and they still got Jancker :laugh hahaaha

Dortmund is the up-and-coming team with loads of young stars and they will only get better.

Leverkusen is losing players (not long till Lucio is gone too I guess), so it doesn´t look that good for them.

Kaiserlauten is always dangerous, but I don´t know the players that well.

HEE, orswich! Hertha Berlin does have creative play in Alex Alves and others. When I´ve seen them play they are surprisingly entertaining and score lots of goals.

For the most parts when I wacth Bundesliga (on DSF) it´s very boring game in the mud - long balls, the player´s individual skills are low, low tempo, no spectacular goals.. but Hertha Berlin and Dortmund are exceptions. I would compare the stantard Bundesliga game to Nationwide - of course then there are these couple of money clubs, which can provide more skill and entertainment.

I did some diggin and found out the biggest transfers this off-season:
FRINGS to Dortmund (from Bremen). Frings was absolutely one of the best defenders in the WC and I´m so glad he´s in BVB now. I didn´t know BVB had bought him, but I acknowleged his ability and thought: "maybe Arse should give him a go!" Excellent signing.

DEISLER to Bayer Munich (from Hertha Berlin). The saviour of German footy. He and BALLACK (from Leverkusen) should form a new dynamic midfield for Bayern M.

ROST to Schalke (from Bremen) is close to international spot. A very good keeper.

OTTO FREDRIKSSON to Borussia Möchengladbach (from Finland). The young Finnish keeper will be the #1 in Möchengladbach and will undoubtebly continue the tradition of excellent Finnish keepers (Enckelmann - Villa, Niemi - Hears, Jaaskelainen - Bolton) and keep Möchengladbach in respectable position.

hmm. very good point JERE.. i have seen hertha play as well but only 2-3 times on TV, and each time they played very defensively, but i'm sure they probably do play well with alves and co. but i havent seen it personally, but i'll take your word that you know what your talking about, because you seem to know your stuff..as for the comment that the bundesliga lacks skilled players, thats BS, the bundesliga has a great top tier but like some other leagues (la liga, for instance) the bottom tier arent even close. german football is making a HUGE comeback and will rival serie A and premiership in the coming years. I forgot about borrussia monchengladbach, they have a great youth system ( many great players have come from there) but never seem to hold on to them, ( my friend has a list of players they gave away the last 5 years and the team they could have had rivals any team in germany)...i think as well that dortmund will have a great season it will definately be a race between them and Bayern, and i hope they win ( i hate bayern), but i think in the end bayern will win the title (this year) but BVB has the youth in place to dominate the Bundesliga in the next couple of years, and i was unaware of the Rost transfer, iI am happy my team got a great goaltender, as for making the int. squad i think the team will have to dump lehmann ( cause jorg-butt is young still and kahn may return)....

Germany were the worst team in the WC - Brazil should have had worthier opponents.

i love the attempted cheap shot by red devil... sorry bloke if your team that got better playing a short passing game and had good potential, panicked during the brazil match and went back to thier shitty long-ball style ( if i was erricksson i would have cut all of them after that).. germany played thier style to the end, and that player kicking kahn in the hand and breaking two of his fingers, cost us the game, otherwise it was close and a much better game to watch than the brazil/england game....man thats thorough Jere, good show...where's Schalke 81 been at lately? man one week away from the bundesliga and i'm getting all excited....

who will win what, who do we have to look out for?

hmmm...two words.......Bayern Munich.

Bayern munich here, bayern munich there, bayern munich everywhere. They will absolutely dominate the bundesliga this season, once again confining the league to 'second tier' status because of their domination. But i would rather they win the league than some other team *cough* BVB *cough* from westphalia taking it, who are the only (slightly) realistic team that could do any damage from bayern taking everything.

but brilliant analysis orswich!!!, and jere with the transfers!!

i think kaiserlautern will have a good year- last year they were a little disappointing. Hertha as well, will be good, but whther or not they can do as well as fourth last season, i doubt it. i have little hope for bielefeld- but admittedly i know very little about them. Oce conversation goes outside of the top 10-12 i am kind of stranded to be honest!!!
I think the best game will be leverkusen at cottbus. Cottbus are, as we are all fully aware, very mediocre, if not bottom 3, and leverkusen, having lost their key player from last season (strangely enough to bayern!!) have been tipped to struggle without him. and i think this would be a fantastic game to determine how leverkusen will go without ballack.
but, of course, match of the round will be at the arenaaufschalke ,when we host wolfsburg.
i don't know too much about huub stevens' replacement, frank neubarth ,but i hear he has a proven track record. A strong start is important this season for us, as we were terrible in the first couple of months last season which cost us champs league, so a win is essential, and admitteldy expected. 3-0 Schalke i (optimistically) predict!!

orswich
Aug 2 2002, 04:38 PM
wolfsburg will put on a good match... they are really coming into form this year from the looks of it... i say 2-1 for schalke or even 3-2... i think wolfsburg will put up a good fight, and they seem to do well at the start of every season..

Hope that Bayern fall on their asses, and flop badly. They need to get some money problems too.

couldnt agree with you more sharok. However the key word is 'hope' and as the consensus is (purely by the sheer hatred everyone here seems to have for bayern) that what hope there actually is- there is very little of it!!!! Maybe if we all put in a big effort and all hope, then perhaps bayern might not win!!!
and about their money problems- im not too familiar with their financial state, but i would , unfortunately, say that with the players they have, and the fact that they don't have any money problems, unlike thier equivilents in italy and spain, they have good financial nouse, tragically.

But all eyes/ears should by now be firmly planted on the Arena Auf Schalke for the big match with wolfsburg this saturday!!

sharok
Aug 7 2002, 02:22 AM
Other clubs need to make the most out of the money their city can create, München is that much larger than the other cities. Is not Berlin larger than München? And why is the match between Schalke and Wolfsburg so important? At least Germany is not in the situation that Italy is in, so there is hope :) .

schalke81
Aug 8 2002, 12:09 PM
And why is the match between Schalke and Wolfsburg so important?

well, to me it is a very important game, as it's the start of the season, and just the anticipation of what to expect for the year with a new manager etc.....but it was said tongue-in-cheek in the first place, as hardly anyone who didnt support either team would give a damn about the fixture.
and in regards to there being 'hope', i think realistically there is not a chance in hell that anyone could take the title away from bayern this year. Purely by the fact that they have strengthened considerably their squad and their closest competition (particularly leverkusen) have reduced their depth. But of course, this is going by what is on paper, once the season starts anything may happen, but that is being more hopeful (excuse the pun) than realistic.

BAyer M is ALWAYS the favourite when the season starts, but remember what happened LAST SEASON. Bayer doesn´t win it ALWAYS - even if they always are the favourites.

Hey Schalke, you´ve been quiet. If there are no interesting political topics for you in Sanctuary - come and give some whooping to us Gunners at our forum. We could use some debate and aggressors.. :)

and that Schalke-Wolfsburg "joke" was so obvious!! :laugh :laugh I laughed my s** of when sharok honestly asks you: "why is it so important.." :razz :laugh But hey, to a Barnet fan EVERY Barnet game is important. Same goes with Schalke.

Good, true and valid point jere. but this year, i believe there is even more reason to think no one can take it from the bavarians.

i was just telling caddy the exact same thing- it is very quiet on here these days. but don't worry, my mind is ticking at 100 miles an hour to try and think of something that will spark some frenzied slanging match on others' political perspectives!! i may just take you up on that offer as well!!

i too was quite surprised it went over his head. but this:

we'll certainly give the league a good shaking this year, and hopefully, if we have a solid year get back into champs league the year. and, between you and me, i reckon we could give dortmund a good run for their money as well!!!!!
