Alright let's hype this one up a little.....

If the task facing Valencia CF and Werder Bremen on the final day of Group G is complicated then at least the arithmetic is not.

No room for error
Valencia, the UEFA Cup holders, must defeat Werder Bremen 1-0 or by two clear goals or else they will exit the UEFA Champions League and, somewhat unwillingly, be forced to defend the trophy they won so gloriously last season. In that situation then Thomas Schaaf’s side, who won the first meeting between the sides 2-1, would reach the Champions League knockout stages for the first time.

Lead lost
But beyond the immediate challenge for both clubs there is special motivation for Valencia against the German outfit. Claudio Ranieri's side started their season in exceptional form but, from the point at which their 1-0 lead on Matchday 2 was transformed into a 2-1 defeat at the Weserstadion, everything seemed go wrong for Spain's champions.

Poor run
Form and luck deserted them at the same time and a series of defeats saw them plummet down the Primera División and exit the Copa del Rey, with a debate even springing up in the Spanish media over Ranieri's job. However, their fightback has been impressive and they have won their last three league games and also overcame RSC Anderlecht in the Champions League on Matchday 5.

Hard work rewarded
Now they can complete their comeback with a win by the requisite margin and concentrate on domestic business until the European season resumes in February. "Everybody was hit very badly when we lost [5-1] at home to [FC] Internazionale [Milano] in the middle of our bad run but the players and I simply put our heads down and worked for this moment," said Ranieri. "Now our destiny is in our own hands.

Valencia superiority
"Now we need to play very intelligently against a top-quality team, keep a clean sheet and score the goal or goals we need," the Valencia coach continued. "I have a lot of respect for Bremen but my belief is that when we and they are at 100 per cent then Valencia are the better side."

Vicente boost
Valencia are boosted by the inclusion of winger Vicente Rodríguez, who has not played since 29 September due to an ankle problem. Left-back Fabio Aurelio is also fit again after a knee injury while Roberto Ayala is close to returning too. Midfielders Mohamed Sissoko (ankle) and Miguel Ángel Angulo (thigh) miss out.

Six-goal flourish
Bremen warmed up in impressive fashion, defeating SC Freiburg 6-0 in the Bundesliga on Saturday despite the absence of Ivan Klasnic, who has scored five times in this season's Champions League. As Ranieri acknowledged: "The problem is that I don't believe we are quite right while their result at the weekend proves that they are. Let's just hope that by winning 6-0 they have run out of goals!"

'Perfect preparation'
Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf may have Klasnic available again – the striker faces a late test on a shoulder injury with Nelson Valdez standing by – and promises that his team will come to attack. "There could not have been a better build-up than winning 6-0 but we are all aware that Freiburg were not Valencia in the Mestalla," he smiled.

Attacking style
"However, we will not change our tactics and try to put up a defensive wall in front of our goal. This is not our style and it's not how we became champions of Germany. We have become something of a goal machine and we will play to score and to win in Valencia."

Valencia CF will have to defend the UEFA Cup they won last season after losing 2-0 to Werder Bremen at the Mestalla to exit this season's UEFA Champions League. The Spanish champions fought hard in front of a passionate crowd, and hit the bar in the second half from a Marco Di Vaio volley, but two late goals from substitute Nelson Valdez killed the game off for Claudio Ranieri's side.

Smooth machine
Despite the fact Ranieri's team had been regaining form prior to this match and were able to field familiar names like Mista, Pablo Aimar and Miguel Ángel Angulo it was clear that, as Ranieri had predicted, Bremen were the more smoothly oiled machine.

Klasnic on bench
Valencia were experimenting with yet another formation, 4-1-3-1-1, while Thomas Schaaf's side had the luxury of keeping their normal system while also leaving striker Ivan Klasnic on the bench because Angelos Charisteas and Miroslav Klose had scored five goals between them at the weekend.

Clinical
The difficulty with Ranieri's tactical choice was that it left Bremen's holding midfielder, Fabian Ernst, free to push forward. As the wide players dragged Rubén Baraja and Xisco Muñoz away from the middle of the pitch, Ernst and attacking midfielder Johan Micoud caused havoc.

Decent openings
Yet despite looking unbalanced - with Carlos Marchena in midfield in place of the injured David Albelda - during the first half, Valencia had much of the ball and made some decent openings and it took two fantastic tackles to prevent the Spanish side going ahead.

Baumann block
One scintillating passing movement between Aimar and Baraja put Mista in position to shoot from eight metres out but Bremen captain Frank Baumann timed his diving block to perfection. Then Baraja's pass opened up a path for Aimar in the penalty box but he cut the ball back instead of shooting and this time an exceptional block from Paul Stalteri stole the chance.

Close thing
Bremen went close to scoring themselves in the 28th minute when Micoud, running free on to Ernst's pass, hammered a left-foot shot which Santiago Cañizares parried over the bar. Then from the corner the goalkeeper needed to dive and clasp Baumann's header - but did so without drama.

Mista miss
Drama followed, however, immediately the second half started. Mista's rustiness was cruelly exposed when an Aimar shot deflected beyond Bremen goalkeeper Andreas Reinke to the back post but with a free chance to score the striker nodded wide. Yet the German champions returned the compliment within minutes after Klose wriggled free of his marker and dived at Micoud's perfectly weighted corner only to miss the ball completely.

Changes
Ranieri looked to seize the initiative, albeit riskily, by throwing on Vicente Rodríguez, Di Vaio and Bernardo Corradi for Xisco, Aimar and Mista. Within moments it almost paid dividends when Corradi's headed flick was volleyed against the crossbar by Di Vaio in the 67th minute. Then something approaching disaster struck when with ten minutes left Vicente's brilliant cross was headed off the head of Di Vaio by team-mate David Navarro as the Italian was about to score into an empty net.

Red card
Heartbreak followed when Valérien Ismaël's long ball was missed by Emiliano Moretti and Valdes rounded Cañizares to score. Sadly, chaos ruled at the end. Angulo received a red card for his bad foul on the goalscorer and then a fight broke out during which both Ismaël and Vicente traded blows - but were only booked. After the free-kick was finally taken, Tim Borowski crossed for Valdez to score his second.

Is there any problem with Baumann playing as a CB?

Werder played not well. Klose looked really shaky. Charisteas wasnt good either. Werder had unbearable bad passes here and there. With Valencia in decent form they would be in UEFA-Cup by now. But because they are not it was enough for Werder to get a below average performance to go through. :clap Weird. Heard Valencia are in high debts. Was there too much pressure for them, to be forced to go throught?
